From AudioFile

Eden's romantic chronicle of nineteenth-century New Zealand is superbly read by McKenzie, a New Zealand native. Three girls, one a servant, travel from England in search of eligible men. Briar, the maid, catches the richest man and goes with him to the wilderness, where she must come to terms with rampaging Maori and the fact that she doesn't love her husband. McKenzie's pace and enunciation ensure that you won't miss a word of Eden's elegant, descriptive prose, and her smooth vocal changes guarantee character recognition. Briar's flinty determination, the other girls' whiny self-absorption, and Aunt Charity's courage (literally under fire) come through clearly. The romance between Katie, Briar's first servant, and a Maori tribesman is touchingly told. It's difficult to imagine how this 1960 novel could have been better presented. J.B.G. 5.0 out of 5 stars MAGIC OF NEW ZEALAND, May 9, 2004

This is the first Dorothy Eden book I read and it is still my favourite. The heroine is not the sweet, sugary kind that is usually depicted in these sort of books. Rather she has lived a hard life and is looking for a way out. However, the man that she is eyeing has been hooked by someone else - enter the no-nonsence hero who is physically attracted to her body and admires her spirit but has qualms about her single-minded pursuit of her objectives. How they adjust to married life and life in the wilds of NZ - as it was then - is an exciting read. BTW the hero and heroine remind me a little of Scarlett O Hara and Rhett Butler!
