A really good suspenseful thriller,
By Lurah B. "Lurah." (Yakima WA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sleeper Cell (Hardcover)
Based on the premise that terrorists may use our vast trucking inductry to stockpile and deliver huge bombs, this story is as up-to-date as tomorrow's headlines. The author develops such great and believable suspense that this reader was unable to stop turning the pages. The protagonists on both sides of the law seem very authentic and substantial which makes me want to know more about their future; the hallmark of memorable character development. I hope this is the first of many novels by Greg Smith who I am adding to my must-read list.

terrifying and realistic - right to the very end,
By Cecelia S. (Fort Worth, Texas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sleeper Cell (Hardcover)
In the post-911 era, no one can doubt that the United States is vulnerable to terrorist attacks. But just how vulnerable are we? How easy would it be, really, for a dedicated group to disrupt our economic structure? To use the vast complexity of our society to obscure simple but effective strikes?
Sleeper Cell explores these ideas, in a fast paced, well developed plot that forces the reader to keep reading; to find out more, transfixed not just by the weave of the story, but also by the stunning comprehension that this story is not fabricated from outrageous ideas, but is set very firmly in the realm of what is possible and even may be likely. This is not a book that can be read over time - it grabs your attention and pulls you into a web of intrigue and politics and gritty every day life, right to the very end. Greg Smith has set a standard for a first novel that others wish to emulate. He has proven his ability to craft a tight, well constructed story and put it in a frame that is both terrifying and realistic.

A Scenario Too Real for Comfort,
By Kenneth W. Finley "KW" (Dallas ,Texas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sleeper Cell (Hardcover)
Imagine a little man in a dark room with no windows. His sole job in life is dreaming up scenarios where the most insignificant act can bring about the end of civilization as we know it. This book describes his worst nightmare. The author starts out with some of the basic scenarios of everyday life and weaves them into a sinister plot that is all too real for comfort. Intelligent adversaries from a much harsher environment than most Americans can appreciate exploit the very freedoms we take for granted to further their aims. The author shows how George and Nita, two intelligent, dedicated people on our side are under equipped, under appreciated, and hampered by the very system they are supposed to uphold. The author's casual narrative style is fast paced and shows an intimate knowledge of the factions he describes. The short chapters keep the story moving at a breakneck pace you will find hard to resist. The story is believeable because there are no super heroes or super villains. Just dedicated, hard working people on both sides. The suspense is in how their mutually exclusive purposes intertwine and mix like pouring water into acid - and just as explosive. Ride with George and Nita as they attempt to sever all the heads of a monster to foil his multi-layered attack. Back to our little man in the dark room. We know he's paranoid, but as this author shows, he could still be right...
