It's one of the few albums I own where I can listen to the album from start to finish and be completely satisfied.

Terrence Martin is, if not the best, one of the best singer/songwriters on the folk music scene today. If you are a folky poser and enjoy Ani De Franco, it's not for you. If you love REAL contemporary folk music, you'd be hard pressed to find a better album put out within the last 40 years.

There's really nothing remarkable about this album except it's consistency in thoughtful songs with a tuneful delivery. It's one of the few albums I own where I can listen to the album from start to finish and be completely satisfied. The opening song, "The Way it Didn't Go" is really outstanding. I also enjoy "All the Bricks in Baltimore" and "Wooden Nickels." Terence Martin is a songwriter whose lyrics can be read as poetry independent of the song and if you haven't heard him he is really worth acquainting yourself with. If you enjoy the contemporary folk genre this album will be a very solid addition to your rotation.

Terence Martin happened to be one of the finest poets this country had to offer! THIS IS ONE OF HIS FINEST RECORDINGS! He counts amongst his legion of fans numerous other poets and songwriters such as Richard Shindell, Rex Fowler of Aztec Two Step, myself and just about every other songwriter I have spoken to since his passing. We lost a GIANT amongst us. A deeply introspective man with his finger planted firmly on the pulse of the human condition. During his life he recorded about 75 songs and EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM IS A GEM. Pay no attention to the two bad reviews here, they were obviously written by someone with absolutely ZERO musical taste or ability! Listen to his songs, think about his words...they will become a steadfast and beautiful part of the soundtrack of your life...as they have in mine.

Sincerely,
Montgomery Delaney

Well, when I got it (recommended by a friend) I thought, ok, some of the songs are cool, some aren't. But then the more I listened the more obsessed I became with Martin's music. Almost every song is amazing in its own way. I highly recommend this album. It's soulful, authentic and excellent.

I heard "The Way It Didn't Go" on Sirius, and it instantly found its way into my heart. What a beautiful, heart-aching song. Rarely do I react this way to a song on first listen, but there I was, practically sobbing as I drove down the road on a mundane errand. I ordered the album that evening, and my wife and I both agreed that it was a new favorite for us. Since buying it, there have been times that just hearing the song has truly moved me to tears. Martin's voice was something special (sadly, he passed away recently), and everything about this song (including the backup vocals, which are also incredibly beautiful) affects me. Give "The Way It Didn't Go" a listen, and if you like it even little, buy this album ... and then check out Martin's other discs. Again, he was truly something special.

TERENCE MARTIN is one of the most TALENTED musicians I have EVER encountered. An INCREDIBLY talented, interesting and SOULFUL singer, musician and songwriter, a BRILLIANT poet, who left all of us all too soon.

I would suggest that the "writer" of the 2003 "review" (below) is just a frustrated writer him/herself who wishes he were a true MUSICAL MASTER and had TALENT approaching Terence Martin's.
What absurd and seemingly mean-spirited comments. Both of these "critiques," written around the same time period (& another from 2003, same style, under Martin's Amazon "Waterproof" listing), sound spiteful -- and even PERSONAL -- and we suggest they be REMOVED from this site. Both comments are penned in a writing style that is suspiciously and strikingly similar to a certain individual formerly associated with the longtime partner/wife of Mr. Martin.

Terence Martin is one of the most AUTHENTIC songwriters around. It would be a crime to enable a couple of "sour grapes" 2003 "critiques" tarnish MARTIN'S name, or for them to have ANY effect on the reputation (or CD sales) of such a BELOVED SONGWRITER. They (below, from 2003) -- were seemingly written only out of malice -- and should be REMOVED from Amazon.com !!

One should DEFINITELY BUY Sleeper, Lost Hills, EVEN TRADE (my favorite!), LAST BLACK and WHITE TV, Division Street and WATERPROOF. I LOVE the INTERPLAY OF INSTRUMENTS, Martin's expert guitar-playing, the mandolin, bass, piano, harmonica, along with Martin's STELLAR, MASTERFUL LYRICS. AMAZING... TRULY AMAZING. LISTENING TO TERENCE MARTIN may just CHANGE YOUR LIFE !!!
