Book Description

January 1, 2010
Sleeping Giant is a thoughtful and robust narrative of the inland region of Southern California's transition from a wild desert wilderness held together by nothing much more than Indians, sagebrush, and adobes, to the vibrant economic and industrial engine that it is today. Its pages contain a reservoir of stories of the early years and include more than a history of the waning days of the Wild West. It traces the monumental transformation of the area in its passage through times of pioneer settlement, the dawn of an agrarian age, development of railroads and industry, as well as the founding of villages that would become pulsating communities bulging with a population of millions. Lavishly illustrated with vintage photographs, Sleeping Giant heralds an ever-promising future for the people of the Inland Empire.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely a beautiful book!, March 9, 2004
This review is from: Sleeping Giant: An Illustrated History of Southern California's Inland Empire (Hardcover)
Rob Leicester Wagner has put together a magnificent book, containing a good narrative and delightful photographs, about one of the fastest-growing areas in the country which still maintains a sense of character and place, unlike many locations in southern California which have grown and changed through the years. There is still to this day a sense of openness and freedom in the Inland Empire, compared to the more densely populated areas along the coast. And the more moderate housing costs continue to attract residents who are willing to brave commutes to jobs in Los Angeles, Orange and Riverside counties.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sleeping Giant: An Illustrated History of Southern California's Inland Empire (Hardcover)
This is an extraordinary book I spotted in a local bookstore.
Immediately I knew that I had to get "Sleeping Giant: An
Illustrated History of Southern California's Inland Empire"
for my son-in-law's Christmas.
The format is inviting, table-top size, and the vintage photographs have been selected with care.
The book was placed in a sturdy white custom-sized box by the
publisher.
Great book! Would recommend to anyone interested in the early
history of Southern California.
