Editorial Reviews

Review

"Delicious, crunchy, Hellish fun.... Bobby's odyssey makes for a compelling, page-turning experience, chock-full of visceral sights and sensory overload." —Tor.com (for Happy Hour in Hell)

"At the heart of the story is a well thought-out plot with mystery and supernatural thrills." — RT Book Reviews (for Happy Hour in Hell)

"Fans are assured of dark humor, even darker adventures, and quirky characters." — Publishers Weekly (for Happy Hour in Hell)

“Fans as well as urban fantasy enthusiasts will enjoy Williams’s take on Heaven’s less desirable places as well as his wry humor and keen insights.” — Library Journal (starred review) (for The Dirty Streets of Heaven)

“A noir fantasy series with a dark and thrilling story of Heaven and Hell battling for human souls. Exhilarating action, fascinating characters, and high stakes will leave the reader both satisfied and eager for the next installment.” — Publishers Weekly (starred review) (for The Dirty Streets of Heaven)

“When I heard that Tad Williams was writing an urban fantasy novel, I got all tingly. Now I’ve read it, and it’s even better than I’d dared to hope. It’s snarky, fast-paced, and above all, original. You should be tingly, too.” — Patrick Rothfuss, #1 NYT bestselling author of The Wise Man's Fear

.
I'll cut to the chase:

1. If you loved the first book, you'll love this one too. It's pretty similar, which is to say, NOT like the middle book in the series. (The middle book is by far the most thought-provoking of the three, but less entertaining for exactly that reason.**)

2. Yes, it's a conclusion to the cycle. The ending implies there will be a new cycle someday, but most of the threads previously introduced are tied up nicely.

I don't have much more to add, since I don't care for spoilers. Suffice to say, I stayed up all night because I couldn't put the darn thing down. I'm paying the price at work today, but it was well worth it.

Thank you, Tad Williams!

** Here is my review of the middle book, in case you wonder what I meant above. Read that and then read my own comment to this review regarding my only disappointment with the ending to this third book.

Okay--I've been waiting for months, but the wait was SO worth it! Tad Williams is back with my boy, Bobby Dollar, in the third installment of this crazy, dark, sometimes painfully hilarious series: Sleeping Late on Judgement Day. Who doesn't love a really bad angel?

Holy crap! Bobby's in trouble, but when is he not? This angel is always looking for grief, and he always finds it. Nothing is what he thinks it is, and even Bobby's jaded eyes are opened as the reality of his unreality unfolds.

Bobby's inquisitive nature has rattled the cage of someone important in the Heavenly scheme of things, and that someone wants Bobby destroyed. They have already gone to great lengths to do so, and now he's going to find out just who it is, and what it has to do with this mysterious Third Way between Heaven and Hell. All his friends and most of his enemies are back in this tale, and some of his enemies prove to be more likable than his friends.

He knows who is behind his troubles, and he is up against overwhelming odds. As Bobby says in one of my favorite lines from this book, "You know your life is pretty screwed up when even the winos turn their backs on you." That comment pretty much sums up the magnitude of his trouble.

There is an innocence and kind of naivety about Bobby Dollar, despite his unsavory occupation. He makes mistakes, and draws attention to himself, and yet he continues to ferret out the truth behind the traitors in Heaven's midst. The bad guys and the dangerous beasts are really bad, and the good guys are just swimming as fast as they can in shark-infested waters. There's always something lurking around every corner, just waiting to trip Bobby up.

Similar to LOST and Sopranos....the ride was great; awesome even, but the finale was a bit of a let down.

Still. The majority of the book was exciting as we follow Bobby Dollar's roller coaster ride to the end. A truly unique and believable setting with memorable characters!

The bad news--it's so much fun to read it was gone in two very late nights. The good news: there's enough wiggle room left at the end of the book I'm hope Tad Williams writes another one in a couple of years. The book itself has characters we loved or hated in the earlier books and some new ones that are wonderful. Loved the Amazons. Best part? Unlike reading the second book that takes place mostly in hell, you won't feel like taking a shower after every chapter.

Another great book couldn't put it down had to read until I was done and even then I was just sitting there thinking about the whole story. I feel like the author has once again given us another great piece of literature that we can enjoy along with his other great series such as Otherland & the Dragon Bone Chair...

Tad outdid himelf on this one. The pace movees well, old threads are cleared up. New Characters are introduced. There are memorable quotes and moments all the way through. It's definitely worth reading, and leaves you wanting more.

Having been a Tad Williams fan since basically the beginning of time, I have been eagerly awaiting the conclusion to the Bobby Dollar series. Tad once again proves that he is a master at urban fantasy. Bobby is constantly getting himself into things that, while yes, he gets out of, but it seems like he's having a blast, even if he is complaining the entire time.

I like how Tad never really gives us a good idea of what the Earthbound version of Dollar looks like, leaving it up to us to use our imaginations. From the narrative, I've always gotten the impression that he is eye candy, he knows it but he doesn't quite let it go to his head.

I haven't even finished the book (I'm about 3/4 of the way through) and here I am writing a review. It's THAT good. I would love to see Tad return to Bobby Dollar's world one day. And while I'm not a big believer in what happens in the hereafter, I would like to think that someone like Bobby Dollar is there waiting for me. Ok, him and Neil Gaiman's version of Death. (Now THAT would make for a good story!)

More About the Author

Former singer, shoe-seller, radio show host, and inventor of interactive sci-fi television, Tad Williams is now a full-time writer. His 'Memory, Sorrow and Thorn' series established him as an internationally bestselling fantasy author. The series that followed, 'Otherland', is now a multi-million-dollar MMO launching in 2012 from dtp/realU/Gamigo. Tad is also the author of the fantasy series, the 'Shadowmarch' books; the stand-alone Faerie epic, 'The War of the Flowers'; two collections of short stories ('Rite' and 'A Stark and Wormy Knight'), the Shakespearian fantasy 'Caliban's Hour' and, with his partner & collaborator Deborah Beale, the childrens'/all-ages fantasy series, the 'Ordinary Farm' novels. Coming in September 2012 are the Bobby Dollar novels, fantasy thrillers set again the backdrop of the monstrously ancient cold war between Heaven and Hell: the first is 'The Dirty Streets of Heaven.'

Tad is also the author of 'Tailchaser's Song': his first novel spawned the subgenre of cats and fantasy that we see widely today. 'Tailchaser's Song' is currently in preproduction as an animated film from Animetropolis/IDA.
