She is not a 'pop princess',

The Good
"One Word" has a catchy `sunglasses at night' keyboard run to it. Instead of shouting, Kelly brings it down to near speaking. The lyrics are quite clever. "Redlight" has an up-beat tempo and a great rhythm that compliments Osbourne's vocals well. "Secret Lover" had a Cars or Devo kind of feel. Kelly shows that new wave may actually be the appropriate genre for her. The Bad The back-beat to "Edge of Your Atmosphere sounds like it was from a pre-programmed Casio keyboard. It's also pretty lame to quote Veruca Salt from Wilily Wonka and the Chocolate Factory in a song ("Secret Love"). "Don't Touch Me While I'm Sleeping" is the dumbest song about avenging a date rape (the dumbest!). They really could have taken any marginally talented female artist and have had the same output. The Verdict Sanctuary took all the right steps here; makeover, top-notch writer producer, more popular genre among demographic, and great pop-rock music. The execution however is flawed. We all know after watching The Osbourne's that this is not the real Kelly Osbourne. She is not a 'pop princess'.

Brilliant.,

This CD has to be my favourite this year. As soon as I heard the brilliant 'One Word' I had to buy the album.
1- One Word. The new sound by Kelly. Fantastic beats, an 80's sound. The verses are better than the chorus, I must admit, but still the chorus (It's not the way that i want, It's just the way that I need it, Day after day) keeps in your head for hours. 9.5/10 2.- Uh Oh. It's talking about your lover denying you in public. A great hook. One of my favourites. 9.5/10 3.- Redlight The second single. It's such a good song. Carrying on with the 80's sound. The chorus is one of the catchiest on the song. 10/10 4.-Secret Lover It sounds like something Blondie should've done. It's a fun pop song. The chorus is simple, but effective. 9/10 5.-I Can't Wait The slowest on the album. Not my favourite. But the lyrics on this song are the best on the album. I think it's about when Kelly missed her family while in Rehab. 8/10 6.-Edge Of Your Atmosphere A strange sort of song, but really cool. It starts slow but soon gets reved up into a fun, futuristic pop song. The clapping gets kind of annoying but except from that it's probably my favourite. 10/10 7.-Suburbia This is about celebrities and how they get criticised for changing their image. The lyrics are very meaningful. And is great for clubs. 9.5/10 8.-Don't Touch Me While I'm Sleeping The rockiest track on the album and the most powerful lyrics. It is about getting victimised by date rape. This is why thier is an explicit warning, because of the swearing in the song. It's nice that although Kelly has changed her music, that she goes back to her old roots sometimes. 9/10 9.-Save Me The most personal song on the album for Kelly. Listening to it, makes Kelly cry. It's about when she was on drugs and that none of her friends helped her. It's a sweet song and it's probably my second favourite. 10/10 10.-Entropy A bit of rock thrown in i guess, but mainly a more an electronic sound. This is a great way to end this fantastic album. 9.5/10 This album is an instant classic, and i hope more people see how good it really is.

I'll be the first to admit that, if her father wasn't who he is, Kelly might not have gotten a record deal. Especially considering the tragedy that was her first album, Shut Up. That CD was a truly awful, manufactured, unoriginal P.O.S.
However, Sleeping in the Nothing is a breath of fresh air for Kelly. It's a complete 180 from her debut. Linda Perry did a great job coming up with some unique music that would compliment Kelly's vocals. Give it a listen. Give her a chance.

Listen to One Word (the first track on the CD) and then to the 80s hit "Fade to Gray" by Visage. Sounds familiar or what???

Very Different From the Kelly I Knew,
This review is from: Sleeping in the Nothing (Audio CD)
When I first saw Kelly's new CD in the store, I thought "blah, obnoxious brat, I'm never buying her albums." However, then I went to a friend's house, who was playing Sleeping in the Nothing, and realized...call 911...that I actually liked it. Her voice is sort of thin, but the beats on the songs make up for it. All of them are catchy, (even though some don't make sense) and feel much more electro-pop than "punk." So, after I went back to Tower Records and bought her album (teeth gritted), I listened again, and found out that the spoiled brat named Kelly Osbourne actually has a place in my music collection, and maybe she could have a place in yours. (I know it's hard to believe the wannabe Avril, overindulged daughter of Ozzy Osbourne can actually sing.)

Track 1: One Word - Samples from Visage's 80's hit "Fade to Gray." The first single off of the album. Did okay in the charts. Written and produced by Linda Perry. Haunting song. Great beat.
Track 2: Uh-Oh - Brings more 80's style than the predecessor. Produced by Linda Perry, written by Kelly Osbourne and Linda Perry. Track 3: Redlight - A moody, almost sarcastic song about Kelly's downward spiral in her life. Written and Produced by Linda Perry. Track 4: Secret Lover - A guilty pleasure of a song. I'm guessing it was written about Kelly's ex. Reminds me of Veruca Salt from Charlie and the Chocolate factory. Produced by Linda Perry. Written by Linda Perry and Kelly Osbourne. Track 5: I Can't Wait - Slower song. One of the two songs on the album about Kelly's stay in rehab. Produced by Linda Perry. Written by Kelly Osbourne. Track 6: Edge Of Your Atmosphere - Kelly's ode to Jack. The beat is very bizarre but uptempo and fun. Written and Produced by Linda Perry. Track 7: Suburbia - Song about conformity. Probably one of the most well written songs on the album. Produced by Linda Perry. Written by Linda Perry and Kelly Osbourne. Very 80's disco-lite. Track 8: Don't Touch Me While I'm Sleeping - A date rape/revenge story, but somehow one of the funnest songs on the album. Probably the most rocking song on the album. Written and Produced by Linda Perry. Track 9: Save Me - Kelly's second rehab song. Someone in her life knew she was taking those pills. This song was about them. Very sad song. Produced by Linda Perry. Written by Kelly Osbourne. Track 10: Entropy - Definitely the most rocking on the album. Very industrial-lite, but still keeps the 80's sound that's been prevelant in every song on the album. Written and Produced by Linda Perry. Track 11: One Word (Chris Cox Mix) - Techno remix of One Word. Also featured on the CD single. All and all, Linda Perry helped Kelly a helluva lot with this album, which is why this was Kelly's best album to date. It was released in 2005 and people still love it. The album has a distinct 80's sound in every song. BUY THIS ALBUM. Also buy the CD single of One Word which features a b-side cover of Human League's Sound of the Crowd.

A few excellent tracks and a few really bad tracks...,
By
This review is from: Sleeping in the Nothing (Audio CD)
Kelly Osbourne really surprises me with some of the songs on this album. Some, including first single 'One Word' and another track 'Save Me' are just amazing. However, there are a lot of things about this album that make it bad. Vocal limitations abound on 'Secret Lover,' bad production on 'Uh Oh,' and horrendous lyrics on 'Edge of Your Atmoshere.' However, songs such as 'Suburbia' and 'I Can't Wait' really aren't that bad, even if they're a little forgettable.
Standout Tracks: One Word, I Can't Wait, Suburbia, Save Me

For anyone over the age 30 or a retro 1980s music fan, there is no mystery as to the musical influences of the album "Sleeping in the Nothing". In fact, I can pinpoint several obvious similarities (or rip-offs?) with specific cuts. Like "Secret Lover" and Berlin's "The Metro", and "Entropy" and early Ministry's "Effigy (I'm Not An)", and the vocal delivery of the verses for "Don't Touch Me While I'm Sleeping" sound a bit like "Never Say Never" by Romeo Void or even Julie Brown's "Home Coming Queen's Got a Gun"... in addition to these there is a general aura of other 80s acts like the Go-go's, The Cars, Eurythmics, and Pat Benetar. What's my point? None, really, after all I bought this album because I like it, but while other artists who use a retro TOUCH in their style today, it seems like this album really COULD have been from the 80s.
That said, "Sleeping In The Nothing" is a consistent album, and tightly produced. Younger audiences or those who completely ignored the 80s may enjoy the fresh sound. I wish the rest of the album were much closer to the single "One Word," yet the album still holds its own regardless.

So much better than her first, and NOTHING like her first!!!,

So I heard Kelly was making a new album. I just kinda was like. "Oh...great. BLAH."
I listened to the single "One Word". Wow. This stuff is almost industrial in some cases. Awesome vocals, great sound effects and all the songs are very well put together. Kelly's vocals have matured greatly, and she is doing a great job in this one. I never expected this sound from her at all. "Redlight" really is probably one of the best songs on the album. It has a catchy tune. Another word on the album, "One Word" is by far NOT the greatest song on the album. My favorite being "Entropy". It's really electronic, good beats and it simply rocks. A very good album by Kelly, and I hope she keeps coming out with new stuff after this one. Totally unexpected and simply amazing!!!! |
