The Ultimate Murder Mystery?, April 2, 2011
This review is from: Sleeping Sphinx (Mass Market Paperback)
One of the most powerful themes of detective fiction is the idea that the key to the murder lies in the character of the victim. As powerful as it is, it is rarely used to full effect. In The Sleeping Sphinx, Carr uses character and character clues as well as physical hints and remembered history to weave one of the most perfect puzzle-mysteries I have read.
Two people, deeply in love, are caught in a web of suspicion from the past. In the finest romantic tradition, another character sums up what is known, and asks "Who can solve it?" and at just that moment a maid announces the entrance of Doctor Gideon Fell.
To balance my enthusiasm: I recommended it to a colleague who thought the whole story a cheat. But I stand by my assessment. This is one of the first Carr stories I read years ago, and I still think it one of his best.

If you only read on mystery novel by the master John Dickson Carr, then read this moody mystery with a Gothic feel. Leave the lights on at night!
