Although I would recommend that any fan of Rosamunde Pilcher read this book, I have to say it is perhaps my least favorite of all of hers. Selina, the heroine, is naive and impulsive and does not come across as the strong female character we get in Mrs. Pilcher's later works. Selina sets off from England to find the father she never knew and was told was dead. Because of a photo on a book jacket, she thinks her father is a writer living in Spain. When she arrives unannounced he tells her in no uncertain terms that he is not her father and she needs to go back to London. Selina cannot seem to leave this man and even hides her passport when he forces her to go to the airport. I was shocked when I learned what the real connection between this young girl and this man was. Because it is not set in England or Scotland as most of her novels are, we miss the wonderful descriptive setting Mrs. Pilcher is noted for. This was Mrs. Pilcher's first novel under her own name and was first published in 1967. Although nowhere near the standards she set with "The Shell Seekers," "September," and "Coming Home," it is a short and worthwhile read for her legions of fans, of which I am most definitely a part.

Rosamund Pilcher writes the most engrossing tales with strongly drawn characters and rich plots, but this is by far her weakest tale. It is certainly entertaining enough in a gentle way, but only as an average romance, and nothing else. Even there it begins to flounder, as I found myself unconvinced of the growing feelings between the characters, and found the ending to be flat and quick, almost as if she had run out of ideas.

If you are reading this review, please do not be put off - Pilcher is one of my favourite authors and I would rate all of her other books 4 to 5 stars. Find "The Shell Seekers" and be enchanted.

This was actually one of my favorite Rosamunde Pilcher books. I certainly agree that it's not quite on a par with The Shell Seekers, which is one of my favorite novels of all time. This novel does lack some flow, but has some great, funny scenes. My favorite is the one when George walks in and finds Selina in his house and the conversation that ensues before she tells him she thinks he may be her father. If you're a Rosamunde Pilcher fan, (and even if you haven't "met" her yet) this is worth reading.

I really like Pilcher but this book is... bad, there's no other word. The characters simply don't stand up. We begin with interaction between Selina and her fiancé and right away, we wonder why on earth he should be his fiancé and never get a valid answer.
Selina gets on my nerves with her lack of character, her stubbornness, helplesness and lack of personality. George Dyer acts like a jerk. We never get to understand how they can ever become attracted to each other when they're presented to us as both so annoying. Maybe that's the key: they'll make a perfectly annoying pair.
An ordinary, clumsily written book that doesn't do any justice to the author of The shell seekers.

I expect "sweet" stories from this author, but this one is a little too far-fetched, predictable, and sweet for me. A young woman is told her father died in the war. Her mother died when she was an infant. She was raised by a wealthy grandmother and a nanny. She becomes a very proper British young lady. She is engaged to marry her attorney when she spots a picture of an author on the back of a book. She's convinced it is her father. She heads off alone to a small coastal Spanish town to meet this man. I won't tell the rest of the story, but ...

I recently came upon eight Pilcher novels - older ones - that I had not known existed. Was I overjoyed? Absolutely! I left the bookstore having bought all eight and couldn't wait to crack one open that evening. I began with Sleeping Tiger and felt Selena's pain at not knowing who her father was. Her daring pursuit in search of the man she believed "could" be her father took me along with her almost as her protectress. Was the man she found a disappointment? He was to me. Not until the very end did he attempt to "make something of himself" and I'm sure in no small part because of Selena. I was VERY relieved when ol' Rodney took a hike out of Selena's life. I won't spoil the ending for anyone that's planning to read Sleeping Tiger but I think it went according design. In my opinion, anything Ms. Pilcher turns out is GREAT.!

I enjoyed getting to know Selina & George. I did not want the book to end!

Received the book in paperback form twice. The order request was to be a hardcover. Sent both paperback to Amazon.
