One of Janie's classic albums,
By
This review is from: Sleeping with Your Memory (Vinyl)
With Jim Ed Norman once again acting as producer, this album came closer to traditional country than most of Janie's albums. A change from dark hair to blonde may have suggested a change of musical direction, but that didn't happen here. However, that change came with the album after this (It ain't easy), when Bob Montgomery became Janie's record producer.
Side 1 of this outstanding album opens with Do me with love, which is one of the two major country hits to be found here. Covers of Homeward bound (Simon and Garfunkel) and Love me (a Bee Gees song that became a British top ten hit for Yvonne Elliman) precede the other major country hit here, Don't worry `bout me baby. Side 1 closes with the title track, which was presumably considered for release as a country single. It certainly sounds good enough to have been one. Side 2 has none of Janie's hits but contains five excellent songs, beginning with a cover of The heart (a Larry Gatlin song also covered by Tammy Wynette), followed by an excellent ballad, Always. The most familiar song on this side is the next track (If you could see me now), which several singers have covered but Janie's version remains my favorite. Two more great songs (There's no future in the past, Midnight words) complete Side 2. Janie was extremely popular with country fans in the early eighties. This album helped to sustain that popularity and listening to it reminds me why.
