Amazon.com Review

In an earlier book called Cinder-Elly writer Frances Minters and illustrator G. Brian Kara retold the Cinderella story in compelling fashion. The pair works its magic a second time, this time setting the story of Sleeping Beauty in present-day New York City. In doing so they have created one of the most memorable characters to grace the pages of a children's book for a long time. The character in question is not the young narrator (who, in this telling, wakes up rather than falling into a century-long nap) but the wicked witch, a fabulous creation of malevolence and ill-will who carries rats in her pockets and sports a gruesome nose that only Richard Nixon's mother could love.

From Publishers Weekly

The heroine of this fractured fairy tale lives in a high-rise apartment building, listens to a Walkman and is wooed by a guitar-toting prince. Karas's stylish artwork contributes a quirky twist to the tale. Ages 3-8.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Sleepless Beauty (Hardcover)
It's finally a whole new version of Sleeping Beauty! Sleepless Beauty gives a modern twist on the classical fairytale. Frances Minters (the author) does an excellent job on the rhyming and alliteration throughout the book. "All our friends and relatives came to the celebration. But the witch from down the block did not receive an invitation." Sentences like these and others use great sentence fluency as they flow evenly. Also the pictures have great detail and set the mood of the story. The tale starts off with Little Beauty getting a spell cast on her by the evil witch. On her 14th Birthday she will prick her finger and everyone nearby will fall asleep. To keep Little Beauty safe from the spell her parents hid everything sharp from her, but she doesn't know why. On her 14th birthday will the spell really come true, and if it does how will Little Beauty escape it? Find out by reading this old-time fairytale that comes to life as you read it. This is a great book that children of all ages will love.
