5.0 out of 5 stars You'll NEVER Skip A Song!
What is not to love about this soundtrack? Jimmy Durante's unique voice is so incredible - and luckily, you can hear it twice (As Time Goes By & Make Someone Happy) - an added bonus for any Durante fans! Other greats include Louis Armstrong (A Kiss To Build a Dream On), Nat King Cole (Stradust), Joe Cocker (Bye, Bye Blackbird), the incredible Tammy Wynette (Stand By...

3.0 out of 5 stars Sleepless Music
If you enjoyed the movie, Sleepless in Seattle, you'll more than likely enjoy the soundtrack as well. It includes the vocals by the legends, i.e., Jimmy Durante, Louis Armstrong, as well as contemporaries like Harry Connick Jr. My only disappointment was that the instrumental excerpts from An Affair to Remember were not included. Otherwise, an enjoyable CD.

Other greats include Louis Armstrong (A Kiss To Build a Dream On), Nat King Cole (Stradust), Joe Cocker (Bye, Bye Blackbird), the incredible Tammy Wynette (Stand By Your Man) and Celine Dion with Clive Griffin (When I Fall In Love). But in my "expert opinion", the best song on the entire CD is Wink and a Smile by Harry Connick Jr.! Connick's voice and incredible piano playing give the song an upbeat feeling! I LOVE IT! I recommend this soundtrack to anyone - I am only 17 years old and love every single song - even though some of them were before my time! Enjoy this awesome CD!

5.0 out of 5 stars It gets to you...and will stay there forever., May 24, 2000

If there was ever a soundtrack that fits a movie perfectly (notwithstanding some of John Williams'work) this has to be it. How can I begin to explain the multitude of feelings in this Cd? Just play "Stardust", and you can see Tom Hanks' character standing on his porch watching the fireworks over the Seattle bay, remembering his wife. Listen to the lyrics and you'll understand what I mean: "...the lonely nights, dreaming of a song; the nightingale, tells a fairytale, and I am once again with you..." Just a sample of how the emotion reaches your soul and stays there. Everytime you listen to this CD you'll find yourself within the music, and falling in love again. Even the instrumental track is a touching, simple piece. All in all, an excellent selection of songs - ByeBye Blackbird, Stardust, When I fall in Love, they're all there for a reason. Listen and learn why.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Moonlight And Love Songs Are Never Out Of Date", November 4, 2004
"You must remember this
A kiss is still a kiss
A sigh is just a sigh
The fundamental things apply
As time goes by
And when two lovers woo
They still say "I love you"
On that you can rely
No matter what the future brings
As time goes by
Moonlight and love songs never out of date..."

True to the lyrics of the first track, "As Time Goes By," moonlight and love songs are never out of date. They are eternal. They are endless. And they never go out of style. This delightful soundtrack consists of twelve beautiful and timeless love songs to warm the heart as interpreted by various talented artists.

The last track is the cream of the crop, "When I Fall In Love," a compositon by Victor Young and Edward Heyman. Celine Dion and Clive Griffin rendered this duet beautifully. This classic has been recorded and performed by numerous singers and musicians but I must admit that this is one of the best versions I've ever heard. This timeless song is one of my all-time favorites and also my wedding "first dance" song. Celine and Clive's great voices blended perfectly and the arrangement by Jeremy Lubbock is simply marvelous. This is one gem of a song.

"When I fall in love, it will be forever
or I'll never fall in love
In a restless world like this is
love has ended before it's begun
And too many moonlight kisses
seem to cool in the warmth of the sun
If I give my heart, it will be completely
or I'll never give my heart
And the moment I can feel that
You feel that way too
Is when I fall in love with you..."

Other noteworthy tracks are Hoagy Carmichael/Mitchell Parish's ultimate love song of all-time, "Stardust," "An Affair To Remember," "A Kiss To Build A Dream On," "A Wink And A Smile," "As Time Goes By" and "In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning."

According to Nora Ephron, Soundtrack Executive Producer: "words and music are unbeatable combination. Put them together and you get love." She's absolutely right and I agree with her. Music is the universal language of the soul. As long as there's music, there will always be love.

I highly recommend this CD. You will enjoy listening to it and will surely be a nice addition to your collection of original motion picture soundtracks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nostalgic, August 18, 2001
Is it possible to feel nostalgic from songs that were mostly popular before you were born or aware of music!? If it is possible, then this soundtrack makes it happen.

Such lovely, winsome, romantic and even some sad songs. I know the movie well and as I listen to this album I can often see the scene it pertains to in my mind's eye.

For me, this soundtrack brings back the feeling of the movie ... which is equal parts sad, hopeful and sweet.

The song 'Stardust' by Nat King Cole stops me in my tracks and causes me to become very quiet and thoughtful.

'Back in the Saddle Again' by Gene Autry brings a smile to my face as I envision Tom Hanks making that call to Victoria (the hyena)! Cute scene.

'Makin' Whoopee' is also a cute song that makes me smile because I remember the scene in the movie. Funny.

One of my favorite songs is 'A Wink and a Smile'. Incredibly performed by Harry Connick Jr.

In summary, really terrific, light-hearted soundtrack. Even if you are unfamiliar with the movie, this album is worth owning.

5.0 out of 5 stars Possibly the best movie soundtrack of all time., December 6, 2005
I absolutely love this soundtrack. My parents and I watched "Sleepless in Seattle" as the in-flight movie on the way to America and the movie always congures up such warm memories for me. We bought the soundtrack after coming back home and it has become almost like a lullaby to me. We have played the CD so often it actually wore out. Such timeless, soothing music. I think it is one of the best movie soundtracks of all movie. All other versions of any of the songs on the soundtrack just don't compare. I definately recommend this soundtrack to all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Music to Build a Dream on, January 8, 2002
Sleepless in Seattle is one of my absolute favorite romantic movies. This soundtrack expresses the longings two people are feeling when they first fall in love.

The words in the songs are as important in the movie as the acting. The music unites the lovers even though they are living far apart. The two lovers have a shared love of sweet songs and are meant for each other..

"As Time Goes By" tells of how the world will always welcome lovers. "StarDust" tells the story of how stars remind the lovers that they are apart. Perhaps even looking up and seeing the same star. "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning" is performed wonderfully by Carly Simon. Her voice reminds me of satin sheets.

"Bye Bye Blackbird" is bittersweet as Joe Coker sings of how no one understands him. The songs almost go through each characters mind as they sit 3000 miles apart in the moonlight

"A Wink and A Smile" is a delicious, happy song about life just being a dream and falling in love at first sight. "An Affair to Remember" is filled with absolute longing. "Make Someone Happy" breaks the sad spell and tells of how if you make someone happy, you will be happy too.

"When I Fall in Love." Sigh, what can I say? This is my favorite song of all time. Performed by Celine Dion and Clive Griffin. What could be more dreamy?

Love makes the unpredictable mystery of life worth living. It is an oasis in a restless word where relationships often end before they have ever had time to begin.

Music for the Heart.

4.0 out of 5 stars call for a missing song, September 4, 2000
By
massimo (Roma, Italy) - See all my reviews
I know the CD having it already... and it is very good. But there is a kind of deception: in the movie there is a wonderful edition of "over the rainbow" sung by Ray Charles, that it is not in this CD, and, moreover, it seems to be not available in any of the Ray Charles recordings. Please, if anybody know how to have this song, please let me know.

Thank you Massimo

OK, so it is a little sappy, but these are fine versions of classic standards. Dr. John and Jimmy Durante in one little package, how could you resist. And, by the way, while I'm not a Celine fan, "When I Fall in Love" is one of the finest songs ever written, in not only for it's succinct-ness. This rendition is fine, and not as schmaltzy as she usually is.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Almost Great Collection!!, July 29, 2003

(VINE VOICE)    (REAL NAME)
This is another situation where I'd love to rate this collection with the most stars available, because I am an avid fan of this kind of music. I perform it myself. However, the choice of Joe Cocker to see the poorly arranged "Bye, Bye, Blackbird" was a grave disappointment, and took away from the overall collection. Not only did it betray the composer's intent, Cocker didn't even include the introduction to the song, which is vital to understanding the tune.

There are standouts, for sure, such as Jimmy Durante, Louis Armstrong, Harry Connick, Jr., and Celine Dion, of course. She is not over-rated as some have suggested. She fits perfectly with this collection, and a great surprise is the presence of Dr. John. He is such a great artist and performer. I wanted to hear more of his stylings.

A great collection, if only you can skip over Joe Cocker!!!

Of the many soundtracks I own (& they go back to LPs)- Sleepless in Seattle is the one most often played in my house - It's delightful, it's fun, it's wonderful - it's good to play when alone, when family is working about the house, and when company comes to call ..... it's wonderful.
