Synopsis:

A dark force is born from the uncommon imaginations of young Sean and Cole Golden, casting a cold shadow over Nod, the ever-changing land of dreams. When the malevolent entity abducts the Sandman, and then snatches its own creators from their cozy beds in an Iowa farmhouse, Jake (the boys’ cynical father) is forced to resurrect the imaginative child within in order to cross the adult-proof barrier that separates the real from the surreal. In Nod, a world literally made of our dreams, the younger Jake must rescue Sean, Cole, and the Sandman before the sleep-deprived citizens of the world burn everything to the ground.

Jake faces physical manifestations of all manner of dreams, including a treacherous money forest, Lost Lake (where mankind’s collected regrets churn beneath black waters), They and Them (monochromatic Siamese twins who are the architects of The Rules for accountants and elementary school teachers), The Tree of Hope, and Death himself—who turns out to be a pretty nice guy. But despite the wondrous locales and characters contained in the story, there is a current of authentic emotion tethering the whimsical fantasy elements to a credible reality like the string of a bright red balloon tied around a child's wrist.

SLEEPWALKER: THE LAST SANDMAN is a modern fantasy without wizards, faeries, dragons, or vampires. It is an exploration of the origin of dreams and the tale of a world-weary, brokenhearted father’s love for the sons he has neglected far too long. It is a fantastical journey through lost love and rediscovered hope that may lead to redemption—for one family, and the world entire.

A thematic cousin to PETER PAN and ALICE’S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND, this unique adventure offers emotional complexity to mature readers while delivering a thrilling ride for the young and the young at heart.

From Red Adept's Kindle Book Review Blog:

4 1/2 Stars

"The writing style of Mr. Marlowe had a wonderful flow to it that kept me enthralled throughout. The descriptions were vivid, bringing the dream world to life. Although this is listed as a YA novel, it is just as enjoyable for adults, if not more so. This was an amazing effort from a first-time novel author. I was truly impressed with the artistic style and professional quality." (Excerpted) - Red Adept

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully written, October 13, 2009

This review is from: Sleepwalker: The Last Sandman (Kindle Edition)
I absolutely loved this story, it was well written and action packed, the author has a great imagination. The characters were nicely defined and all of them were completely fleshed out. You felt as though you knew each and every one of them. Ditto on the locales, you could visualize each of the different places the book took place.

My favorite part of the book is where Jake (the dad) had to make up or tell a story. Sort of a story within a story. These miniature tales were so entertaining and enthralling, I was almost disappointed that they didn't go on.

The writing is very well done. I know that this is his first published book, but there are more to come. Count me in for the next one, Brad.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Really Good Story, October 16, 2009

I very much enjoyed this story. It is about a fathers quest to save his two sons from a creature (Mr. Brink) created by their fears, who lives in the land of dreams.

The characters and locations are very well defined and easily come to life in the readers mind. The story kept me interested and looking forward to the next page, not to mention up too late a couple of nights because I didn't want to put it down.

If you enjoy fantasy/fiction, it is definately a must read. I am certainly looking forward to more.

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVED this book!!!!, October 18, 2009

This review is from: Sleepwalker: The Last Sandman (Kindle Edition)
I read this book on vacation and trust me I would be very upset if I had wasted time on a book that wasn't very good while on vaca. This book didn't let me down. It completely took me to another place, or should I say places. This author does in fact have a vivid imagination that few authors have. I KNOW I will continue to read his work in the future.

I would recommend this book to ALL ages!!! While it could be considered a childrens book, as they would enjoy it, it is also very much an adult book!!!

I'm not a reviewer I'm a reader so this review isn't as eloquent as the reviews before me. As a reader.... Five stars from me!!!!!

More About the Author

After studying filmmaking at NYU Brad Marlowe went on work as a story analyst for the notorious schlockmeister Roger Corman. After his tenure with Corman Mr. Marlowe wrote and directed his first feature film, AT HOME WITH THE WEBBERS. The quirky dark comedy starred Jennifer Tilly, David Arquette and Jeffrey Tambor. Next Brad penned the sexy thriller, OBJECT OF OBSESSION, while writing a technology (yes, technology) column for Playboy Magazine. WEDNESDAY'S CHILD, Mr. Marlowe's next Indie feature won Best Film at the Austin Film Festival and Brad was awarded Deluxe Lab's Young Filmmaker Award. Brad was then brought in to rework the script and replace the director on SECOND TO DIE, which starred Erica Eleniak, and can bee seen (to Mr. Marlowe's chagrin) from time to time on the Lifetime TV Network.

In stark contrast to his previous narrative fiction films, Mr. Marlowe and his then-wife, Leonor, self-financed GLASS HOUSE, a historical documentary about Colonel Jose Arturo Castellanos and his assistant George Mandel, who saved 50,000 Jews from Auschwitz by issuing certificates of Salvadoran citizenship, thereby facilitating their escape to Switzerland and surrounding countries. GLASS HOUSE premiered at the Los Angeles Latino Film Festival and has since been screened in various film festivals, as well as official presentations in Washington, D.C., Panama, and El Salvador. The Museum of Tolerance, in Los Angeles, presented the film in early 2010.

SLEEPWALKER: THE LAST SANDMAN was Mr. Marlowe's first published novel and it was a long time coming. HOUSE OF DRUMS, the author's second book, is a dark departure from his family-friendly debut novel. The filmmaker-turned-author lives near Los Angeles with his two beautiful sons.
