Richard Bandler and John Grinder's 2 volumes on The Structure of Magic published over 20 years ago launched the whole field of NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming). I'd consider Robert Dilts' recent Modeling with NLP and the present volume as the new definitive landmark publications in the development of NLP. Sleight of Mouth will help beginners understand why NLP is not just a passing fad, but continues to be of such great service in freeing and enriching people. It is also something that all of us can learn and master. For someone like myself, who was first exposed to such language patterns from the very beginning close to 20 years ago, I continue to grow in my understanding and appreciation for the scope and application of these patterns. As Robert explained, "It has only been in the last several years that I have gained enough insight and understanding about how beliefs are formed and held cognitively and neurologically that I feel able to make the deeper structures underlying Sleight of Mouth sufficiently clear and concise." (Preface, xii) The subtitle, The Magic of Conversational Belief Change, is very apt. It continues to be magic. Key concepts like, frames, reframing, chunking, values, criteria, structure of beliefs, belief change and "thought viruses" are all lucidly explained, with practice exercises. The whole NLP world is grateful to Robert and eagerly awaits any future publications by him.

Big fonts, humorous approach and a high-degree of practicability makes this book an easy read. You'd learn strategies like Chunking, Reframing and Heirarchy of Criteria which easily create environments of belief change and cooperation in almost any encounter.
In contrast to the more established authors on the genre, Dilts takes NLP from the "mysical heights" and magically transforms it into knowledge that total newbies can comprehend in just a day.
I'd recommend this for those who are actively involved in professions where counseling, motivation or leadership skills are necessary.

If you want to learn to use the Sleight of Mouth patterns to create a world to which people want to belong or if you want to just improve your ability to influence yourself and others, this book provides an entertaining read and a thorough methodology to improve and enhance the ways you use language.
Robert is known for being respectful as much as he is known for his competence. These are some of the qualities that shine throughout the presentations of the patterns.
I've studied with some of the elite of this technology (NLP) and I place this volume with the best of the best of whats available.

this is the kind of NLP book i love. one that covers the serious ideas and theories in a good conversational tone and references not just other NLP books, but outside sources and historical figures.

this is not another "self empowerment" book, this is about the concepts and dynamics of NLP.

Dilts, the author, has a great grasp of NLP. He keeps an involved subject clear so most of us mortals can understand it. What he covers is a serious subject not turned into a pop culture thing like Tony Robbins.

Those who are serious about understanding other people and developing leadership skills should buy this book and study it. Although well written it takes some effort to assimilate the principles Dilts so aptly presents. But then calculus was much more difficult.

Also, Amazon service again was beyond excellent. How do they deliver so quickly?

John Grinder and Richard Bandler wrote a book a long time ago on 'Reframing' in this book they essentially talked about 3 types of reframing... Meaning, Context and Six Step Reframing. They gave a couple of exercises on how to practice Reframing but I always felt somewhat limited by what was taught. Then comes a long Robert Dilts and he creates 'Sleight of Mouth'... These patterns are such a great way to help clients overcome any concerns or objections that they might have to making a change in their life.

I've had the pleasure and watching old seminars of Robert Dilts that were recorded back in the '80s. I've even met Robert in person at one of his trainings at UC Santa Cruz. He is the nicest guy you could ever hope to meet. He let some of us sit in on a class that he was teaching for some of his Master Practitioner students on Sleight of Mouth.

I love these patterns taught in this book they really help you when communicating with people so long as you practice using them.

Robert Dilts is a great NLP writer. It was a great refresher book for an old timer and great for a beginner. Intellectually written... A must read. Hated the cover of the big mouth, but enjoyed the humor of it.

If you are into NLP in a big way then this is more or less a MUST READ. It is far from the easy "do it yourself" style that you get from the likes of Tony Robbins (who is also good but in a different way) it is aimed as NLP Master practitioner level readers. It's full of great explanations and examples. I recommend reading it a few thousand times. As an NLP coach, I find the slight of mouth patterns a huge help in my sessions. This is an excellent book.
