5.0 out of 5 stars Secret to the Gel Pads, January 26, 2010

If you notice almost all of the negative reviews for these type products are from people who have NOT used the product. I am am exercise physiologist and I know the products work - as long as your expectations are reasonable. They will strengthen your abdominal muscles and obliques - they will NOT trim the fat from your waist.

A single charge of the batteries lasts for 20-30 sessions. In three months of use 5 days a week, I have charges mine 3 times.

The stimulation is intense at high levels. The thicker your abdominal fat pad the lower the intensity of the stimulation will be for you. I am currently out of shape and have about a 1" abdominal fat pad - 75 is pretty intense.

SECRET - The gel pads do wear out in about one month - but, if you will do the following they will last at least three months and still be in good shape. Make sure you put the plastic covers back on the pads immediately after use. Before each use, wet your fingers with warm water and wet the gel surface - this will maintain the water level in the gel for months of use.

Use the belt. It will not work on the shelf. It takes at least 30-60 days to begin to see (feel) the results. If you use it the abs will come.

If you really want to SEE the newly developing abs, you MUST loose the fat. Stick to a healthy diet with portion control.

My only complaint is with the connection between the control unit and the belt. It is flimsy and I expect it to break too soon. I often get screen error I think are related to this connection. But if I firm up the connection and restart the unit it works like new.

4.0 out of 5 stars Time well spent., February 22, 2009
This review is from: Slendertone Men's System Abs Toning Belt (Sports)
I purchased this piece of equipment so that I could work on my abs effectively. I am in the military, so we already have a pretty hard-core work environment. But my abs seemed to be lacking. I purchased this item mostly on a whim, just to see if it was worth its weight.
Well, after a month of operation and following the workout manual, I have found that it is pretty damn effective. Obviously as with any product, you cant be obese and throw this on expecting all your problems to be over. But if you are doing some sit ups and crunches on your own, using this before bed makes a big difference.
I will continue using this product, and recommend it to others.

5.0 out of 5 stars A definite improvement over previous model, September 21, 2008
By
This review is from: Slendertone Men's System Abs Toning Belt (Sports)
I reviewed the previous Slendertone belt, and indicated there that I was going to try this one out. I am glad I did. The programming and intensity range of controls is vastly improved, and the recharge-ability of the device is a true plus. I have been using the unit for approximately three weeks, and it has definitely helped me to restart an exercise program after several months off due to illness. Because the controls are much less bulky, the unit is easier to wear under clothing, and much easier to exercise with while wearing. I am not quite sure why one of the reviewers is so negative on this device. Right now, I am using it an intensity of "40," and i clearly get quite an involuntary muscular workout from it. My wife has commented that she can see the involuntary reactions while the muscle stimulation is working. Granted, I lost a lot of wight while ill, and at 6'3" and 162 pounds, the belt doesn't have to reach "far" in order to stimulate my abs.

I would knock off a half star because of the proprietary connector between the recharger plug and the controller. I recently went on a trip, and I left the wall plug at my hotel. Fortunately, the battery lasted for several days after recharging, and so I had no problem waiting for the hotel to ship the plug back to me. But if I had lost it for sure, I would have been SOL. I contacted Slendertone customer support, and a week later, they still have not responded to my request for a replacement plug.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard to believe, but this thing actually works, January 24, 2009

I know it sounds hard to believe, but if you're already in semi-reasonable shape, this thing actually works. This is one of those products where you tend to think, "Well if this kinda gizmo actually works, why doesn't EVERYBODY already know about it?" I think one reason may be that it probably doesn't work if you really do have a big-fat gut. But if you're like me and only have a layer of fat on your gut (maybe an inch thick? not gobs of fat probably), this gizmo really is able to zap and exercise your abdominal muscles through the fat.

Here's my story: too much business travel got me up to about 163 pounds at 5'7" (male); spent 4 months on the treadmill (and The Abs Diet) getting that down to about 153 pounds (I was doing weights too, so I was gaining muscle mass, hence the slow weight loss). I have a "stiff" spine due to a youthful illness so I can't do crunches. After reading other Amazon reviews that say this gizmo really works, I decided to give it a whirl. Two weeks later (still doing weights and treadmill) I've dropped 4 pounds and I can feel (still under a layer of fat) how strong my ab muscles are getting.

This has me really motivated to lose the final layer of fat on my gut. In the few more weeks that'll take me, I should have some nice abs waiting to greet me.

I highly recommend this device as a useful part of a regular exercise and diet program.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really Like It, February 6, 2008

So far it was worth my money. It's easy to use and you can really feel it working. I've only been using it about two weeks but I've already lost 5 pounds and people have been asking if I've lost weight. It doesnt take much dedication so that's a plus as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Yep, it works, February 12, 2010

This review is from: Slendertone Men's System Abs Toning Belt (Sports)
First, I'm 60, 6'0" tall, and about 170, so not fat, but with a little too much middle-aged buildup around the midsection. I've never in my life been able to achieve a six-pack, owing probably to a genetic aversion to doing tons of ab work. After about 2 1/2 months with Slendertone, my belly is still not a thing to admire when I take off my shirt (I need to get the calorie count down further, and it doesn't help that I have a pretty inert lifestyle), but, even with the belly bulge, now when I flex my stomach I can see some definition I've never had before.

I'm going to keep using the Slendertone for at least another four months and see what can be accomplished. It's not really less pain than doing crunches (at higher settings, the contractions are nothing to laugh at), but it exerts a certain discipline (if you can make yourself put it on every day for a session), and it allows me to keep working at my computer while my stomach gets a workout.

The Slendertone product is well-made. The battery is easy to charge and holds its charge for several days. Respectfully handled, this product should give many years of service.

Now for something that concerns many people: pad life. I'm still on my original set of pads after almost 3 months, and don't see why I can't keep using them for many more weeks. The secret is simple -- whenever you finish with your Slendertone session, gently remove the belt from your stomach so the pads don't tear, use an almost dripping-wet sponge to gently wipe the pads and get them very moist, then carefully replace their clear protective plastic covers, massaging them to get as much air out from underneath as possible. Make sure the edges are sealed to prevent air from getting in and drying out the damp pads. It's an easy maintenance routine that takes maybe 45 seconds. Once you've covered the pads, carefully fold the belt so as not to bend the pads (in the same way it was folded when it initially arrived in the box)and keep it stored in its little tote bag.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid kick in the gut., July 5, 2009
This review is from: Slendertone Men's System Abs Toning Belt (Sports)
This thing will really give you a nice kick in the abs. I'm wearing it right now at 40/40 (each side is adjustable) out of 100. Feels about the equivalent of holding myself at 45 degree angle sit up for 5 seconds.

Sometimes it feels like one side is stronger than the other even if you adjust the numbers to compensate (can't go more than 10 settings higher on one side over the other. If this happens its probably because the lubrication is fading or its not tight on one side. You can check if its loose by pushing the pads into you while using and see if it feels stronger. If it isn't stronger you can use water/sponge and cover both sides of the pad that feels weak. Petroleum jelly seems to also work decent (KY or the Equate off-brand is cheaper). I don't expect the pads would really ever wear-out with these methods, but without the pads would probably weaken after 2-3 weeks with good care.

As for how it feels, everyone I've let try is really nervous just before it starts, but on the starting 1 setting it just feels like a little tickling vibration with the vibrations getting stronger as you go up. Definitely not painful or anything to be afraid of.

I've used it almost every day for the past 1.5 weeks and haven't had to charge it even once since taking out of the box. I'd imagine most of the kick is really being done by your own muscles and the belt provides just enough electricity to simulate your brain telling the muscles to contract.

As for how it looks, if you put the controller in your pants pocket instead of the belts pocket you could wear it to work or wherever and no one could tell you had it on. If you leave it in the belts pocket you might look like you have a stomach tumor but still works just fine for around the house.

Bottom line is my abs are tighter and warm to the touch even a day or two after a workout. It definitely has the kick to put you on the floor with more to spare. I doubt I could continue standing for long if I kept the power above 50. They have an arm version I might have to try as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Do nothing and lose unwanted pounds off your stomach area?, February 7, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Slendertone Men's System Abs Toning Belt (Sports)
I've never written a product review before but I've been so impressed with this the Slendertone Ab Toning Belt I wanted to put something out there.

I purchased this in January 2010 as part of a New Year's resolution to 'get in shape'.

I have about 20 pounds I'd like to lose. I've always had some 'love handles' that I would like to get rid of. At the same time, I work 60+ hours a week and have little time to exercise (though, I try to find about 30 minutes 5 times a week to exercise). When I saw a commecial for a product that seemed like you could simply strap on and it would 'firm' up my stomach - my first thoughts were 'yeah, right those commercial models have likely always had tight midsections before they strapped on the electric shock gismo'- but, I was still intrigued by it. I remembered seeing some Bruce Lee interview from years ago, or maybe it was one of his movies, where he used some electric shock thing to exercise his muscles. I decided to do some research, first on the model I saw in the infomercial - I can't even remember the name of it - but, while researching - and reading the fine print on it, it was one of those deals were you buy it for something like $19.99 but if you don't return it in 30 days they charge you something like $250.00 (similar to the whole video professor thing). There were a few reviews of people who found the product to be ok, but really complained about the marketing practice of this particular company.

Separating the product idea from the marketing issues, I did some more research which lead me to decide to 'give it a try' - not to 'melt the pounds away' but, in hopes of 'firming and strengthening' my midsection. After doing various searches on different products I came to this one which seemed to be the most reasonably priced with a decent amount of positive reviews (rather than just a couple you find on some products which are likely from the makers of the products!).

I've had this now for over a month - I also still have a layer of fat over my midsection - but, I also have something else - a firmer, stronger midsection! I'll admit I do an elliptical about 5 times a week for about 30 minutes, but, I intentially have not been doing any cruches, sit ups, etc - to see if this thing really works. It really does.

You'll find the first few times you use it it will feel kind of odd. At first I wondered, is this thing really causing my muscles to tense up, or is it just lightly 'shocking' me to give the impression of the muscles tensing. It really does cause the muscles to tense.

Imagine sitting down, or walking around, and how your stomach feels if you just tense it up on your own - it's pretty much the same thing. But, wearing this is like breathing - an involuntary action - where you muscles will tense up on a rhythmic basis. Now, you could do this voluntarily - walk around and tighten your stomach muscles - hold it for 10 seconds or so -and then rest a moment, and do it again for 30 minutes - but, I much rather do it involuntarily through using this thing. I strap it on and pretty much forget about it while I work.

After you've used it for about a week you'll find you can really up the intensity - and after two weeks you'll find your stomach muscles really getting stronger. It's actually pretty motivating in that now I'm even more encouraged to go through the pain of getting rid of these final pounds to get to the point where my stomach muscles stand out.

Bottom line: If you're looking for some way to do nothing and lose unwanted pounds from your stomach area - you won't find that with this product. But, if you wouldn't mind having a stronger mid-section and firmer muscles (even if it means being able to get up off the couch easier!) than this is for you. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

After 23, (30 minutes ea) sessions I am really impressed with the product,
not knowing yet if it really works. Definitely product is trying
very hard to do so. After first full charge and after 23 session
battery indicator is not blinking yet which means that I can go
another session or two or....? w/o charge.
Pads are still in excellent condition but I clean them often with windex
specially when debris of my skin or hair are visible on the surface.
Covering pads precisely with provided foil/film is essential in maintaining
high mileage. Even if product wont burn fat I still like it and
will be using it. Definitely belt is trying hard to exercise abdomen muscles.
I spent for mine about $100 and I think it's worth every penny.
