I suspect that most of the very positive reviews were written within a few hours of purchase. I also was happy with this tool...at first. It took a couple of envelopes before I got the hang of how to hold the Slice and envelope in order to successfully open it, but once I did, things went smoothly, cutting the envelope, never the contents. However, after about the 4th or 5th envelope, I noticed the blade acting duller and duller until it just would not open anything. I switched to using it left-handed so that I could use the other side of the blade. Same thing happened: great at first but the blade became dull after about 4 envelopes. I shall be writing to the manufacturer about my disappointment also. (Purchased at Von's $4.99)

I purchased two of these over a year ago (one for me and one for my mom), and they've never left an envelope uncut! The product is easy to use, so I'm not quite sure why the other reviewers had issues. Maybe they were defective. They should've tried contacting the manufacturer for a replacement or refund (I'd hope they send a replacement, but I wouldn't know first hand). Anyways, mine (and my mom's) work great, so kudos to slice!

Picked this up at safeway for a few bucks. It works really well. Ceramic blade is a nice touch. You just run it over the top of the envelope and it puts a nice, clean cut on the front side of the envelope about 2mm from the top. I'm not sure what 'proper technique' is but I run the envelope through perpendicular to the cutter. It looks like it could potentially cut through the a page or two of the contents inside if you're not careful though. My trick is to tap the envelope on the table a few times to settle the contents to the bottom, and then do the cut. If that doesn't work you can always cut the envelope on the short side. And if the envelope is really that full maybe you should just open it by hand.
I honestly don't know why this has such bad ratings...

I work in a small mailroom and will usually open at least 50 envelopes of all sizes and conditions a day ... sometimes many more. I got one of these on the recommendation of one of our suppliers and gave it a spin.

I'd rate it "not bad" if and only if one is using it occasionally on a clean, firm number 10 envelope with one sheet (maybe two) of paper in it. It didn't cut even those consistently for me (and I do this a LOT), and like another reviewer I had a number of partial cuts. Never mind large envelopes, beat-up or baggy envelopes, plastic/tyvek envelopes (plastic mostly on magazines) or anything other than a nice, clean number 10. It's just not going to work on those.

Now, most people aren't going to be opening as much mail as I do, and this might serve for them. All in all, though, for price and performance, go with the Presto (or similar style) opener.

Take it from a "professional". ;)

Do yourself a favor and drill a hole int he slice end to hang it up. I have ordered five of this in the past three years and they always dissappear into a crack in the universe. (My wife puts them in her purse and travel bags). Suggestion to the manufacturer: offer multiple product packs! Love this products, never seems to dull, some work better than others so order lots of them, never got one that did not work however. A really great product and saves so much time in the opening of mail.

Slice Letter Opener, Ceramic Blade will open a letter along the top of the envelope with just a slide across it and it is open.

I've tried experimenting with various techniques, and have concluded that this thing simply doesn't work.

The correct technique results in less of a "slice" and more of a deep scratch in the envelope. With some work you can pry the envelope open along this score line, but this is awkward, and the score is typically only deep enough for about 2/3 of the envelope's width, so even after all of that work you still end up having to tear the envelope open the rest of the way.

When I say "correct technique" I'm referring to the fact that you need to make sure the contents of the envelope are away from the edge you're going to cut. Ironically, if you don't do that you'll get a really nice cut through the envelope, but the first layer or two of the contents will also be sliced.

So you end up having to make a choice: do you want to cut your letters open too well (damaging the contents) or do you want something that doesn't really open your envelopes effectively at all?

This letter opener is difficult to handle. Hard to draw envelope thru slicer. Hasn't sliced a clean cut on 20 attempts of various envelope thicknesses, mostly regular envelope stock.
