Unputdownable,
This review is from: Slicker (Hardcover)
I was at my grandmother's house and I picked this book off her table and read it in less than 24 hours. Therefore I guess I would call it unputdownable. Don't be misled by the somewhat uninspired cover art--this book is totally smart and good. Jackson's prose is EXTREMELY generous. I guess I'll go read this other one, Posh.

enjoyable read! how many of us would, at one time or another for whatever reason, just pull out a map, close our eyes, and wherever our finger rested we'd go to for the thrill of it. that journey was about taking a chance on something new and getting rewards that would touch all involved through sheer exposure to someone or something "different" than their "usual". thanks, Lucy :)

I was given Slicker as a gift- so it was not my initial book choice. I was instantly engaged with the main character, Deseriee, and the narrow visioned town in Kansas she chooses as her destination. The town folk are hilarious and colorful, (and sadly not fictionalized). This is an entertaining, heartful story that will take you away from your everyday stressors. Lucy Jackson's choice of words, and descriptions of people and events make me feel as I am with the characters. A pure delight. So happy my friend has great taste in gifts.

every word counts,
This review is from: Slicker (Hardcover)
This is a poignant, endearing, and often funny read. A college student randomly selects a place to go to escape from her recent disappointment with love and problems at home with divorcing parents, a seemingly "needy" mother, and an ill grandfather. The premise of the book seems quirky, yet the characters are so rich and believable. The situations they encounter are both exaggerated, but really ring true, all at the same time. What a gift Jackson has for touching the soul of the reader! The author brings the reader immediately into the story with both a richness of language and the accuity of a hawk. As I was reading, I couldn't help but devour every word. It seemed that every word counted, and I wanted more! Will definitely keep reading her books!

A terrific read. Ms Jackson transported me to places unknown, and made me feel as if I'd been there all my life. I easily slipped inside the characters - each with his/her own quirky personality, I came to love them all. She tickled my funny bone and made me laugh out loud. I found myself smiling, sighing with compassion at so many things, and was just so sorry to have read the last page. I wanted more. Keep writing, Lucy!

THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME,
This review is from: Slicker (Hardcover)
Lucy Jackson's Slicker turns The Wizard of Oz on its ear--make that eye! Dorothy (or in this case) Desiree (Yale student and card-carrying Gossip Girl/City Slicker) throws herself into the eye of the Emerald City tornado of her parents' colapsing marriage and is deposited smack in the middle of a Kansas town (pop. 1238) where she is free from the NYC boyfriend who likes her "veeery veeery much" but does not love her. Warning: You may find yourself rationing your consumption of chapters out of fear they will be used up too quickly! by Suzanne O'Malley Are You There Alone?: The Unspeakable Crime of Andrea Yates

This review is from: Slicker (Hardcover)
The artist currently known as Lucy Jackson has brought us another artful expose of contemporary urban family life, its disturbing and comic aspects, all wrought with care and skill into an engaging, sometimes wrenching dual narrative. Mother Nina and daughter Desiree seem concurrently to travel away from each other and back, each yearning for the affirmations of familial love. Jackson's eye for the crucial detail, her ear for turns of phrase that define character, and her distinct talent for driving at the heart of heartache
make "Slicker" a moving and inspiring tale of parallel journeys home.

This book is startlingly good. There are no throw-away characters, you care about each and every individual and situation, there is no pat ending and no waste of words. Everything that happens does so for a believable reason, everyone gets what he or she actually deserves. I want to know more about these characters, Lucy Jackson.

"Slicker" could not put this book down, a must read!,

Lucy Jackson's "Slicker" is a story that moves quickly and easily draws in its readers. Desiree who escapes her New York City life, flees to Kansas leaving behind her single and needy mother, ex-boyfriend, homosexual father and ailing grand-father. Her journey to this remote town is both painful and hilarious. Meanwhile back home in New York, Desiree's mother Nina struggles to accept her soon-to-be ex-husband's homosexuality as well as an emerging relationship of her own. Not a character in this heartfelt novel, including the people who cross Desiree's path in Kansas, is untouched by delightful eccentricity. These characters will stay with you long after you've finished this memorable, sensitive and superbly written novel.

Wish I knew who Lucy Jackson (a pseudonym) is because I'd love to read her other novels. Couldn't put this down! The characters are believable and charming. The writing is so engaging and literate without being at all stuffy. Small-town Kansas is as believable as New York City. This is a warm and witty novel that deserves a wide readership: a great read!
