Editorial Reviews

Cindy Cashdollar has worked with the likes of Bob Dylan, Leon Redbone, Graham Parker, Beausoleil, and was the steel guitarist with Asleep At The Wheel for 8 years. Surprisingly though, Slide Show is her debut album. Almost as an illustration of her experience as a sideman, she generously shares the spotlight with some stellar company. Slide Show finds her trading and blending lines and music with vocalist Sonny Landreth, tele-slinger Redd Volkaert, steeler Lucky Oceans, and gulf-coast pianists Johnny Nicholas and Marcia Bell along with Mike Auldridge, Jorma Kaukonen and Steve James. Cindy navigates her musical journey through shimmer and swamp, distortion and twang, and simple acoustic bliss. Cindy is also a frequent guest on public radio's A Prairie Home Companion.

Possessing a vibrant tone and impeccable intonation, Cindy Cashdollar is one of today's finest steel and lap slide players. She honed her relentless sense of swing, crisp articulation, and sassy vibrato during a long stint with Asleep at the Wheel, and was recently inducted into the Texas Western Swing Hall of Fame. On Slide Show, Cashdollar cuts loose with a host of musicians, including slide wizard Sonny Landreth, Dobro master Mike Auldridge, steel legend Herb Remington, and fingerpicker Jorma Kaukonen. Armed with a roomful of instruments - tripleneck Remington and Fender console steels, Rickenbacker and Campbell lap steels, and National Tricone, Beard, and Dobro resonators - Cashdollar reveals her mastery of electric and acoustic blues, Western swing, moody instrumentals, and bayou R&B. Transparently recorded, she and her pals are panned apart in the stereo field, which makes it easy to appreciate their stunning musical interplay. New to lap slide or steel guitar? Start here.

Cindy Cashdollar is definitely one of the greatest dobro/steel guitar players of our time. This album (her first as a leader) demonstrates how versatile a musician she is. She can play in all the styles, blues, swing, country, ballads, bluegrass etc. and always plays with the utmost taste and tone. Rather than going for the most notes, she goes for the most tone and feeling. Cindy is a terrific player - very soulful with great timing, tone and taste. This album is highly reccomended for anyone who loves good music.

As the previous reviewers have said, Cashdollar is an excellent musician. Her tones are gorgeous, and her feelings & moods are related beautifully. The songs are mixed between purely fabulous country, rockabilly, and sweet and mournful ballads.
I would urge anybody to buy this music - you won't be dissapointed!

Cindy Cashdollar is not a name that would be familiar to most non-musicians. To my knowledge, while she has produced a series of instructional videos, "Slide Show" is the only CD she has headlined. She has been a sideman (a label she gives herself) for many years, yet the level of skill she displays on this outing strongly suggests that she is capable of producing additional albums under her own name.

I initially stumbled upon the latter half of one of her songs while tuning in to that venerable old Canadian cultural institution, CBC Radio. Cindy's playing took my breath away! By song's end I had pen and paper in hand to scribble down the album's details so I could order a copy through Amazon. Since it's arrival, I have played this disc many times; it never fails to delight!

While "Slide Show" does include two vocal tracks, the album consists mainly of instrumental duets performed in a variety of styles with such notable slide guitarists as Sony Landreth, Herb Remington, Steve James, and Mike Auldridge. Whether playing pedal steel, dobro, lap steel, or tricone resophonic guitars, Cindy's tone, technique, and musicality shine on track after track with a wonderous beauty that is truly uplifting to the soul.

Production values are very high: every note, every nuance is captured with crystal clarity on this recording, and the mix between the various instruments is perfectly balanced. Should this CD turn out to be the only one featuring Cindy's name on the cover, it will stand as a fine testament to the playing of a brilliant musician and true slide guitar virtuoso.

"Slide Show" is worth every penny of its price tag, and earns the full five stars from this reviewer. Highly recommended!

In a genre where quantity of notes and senseless speed sometimes trump musicality, this CD is a revelation. In Cindy's hands, the steel guitar can express any mood, in any style of music. Who knew? The duets with other fine steel players are more beautiful and satisfying than I thought possible. It's a privilege to own this CD and get to listen to these tasty, satisfying, musically stunning duets. Thank you, Cindy!

Cindy's last selection, "Locust Grove", clearly is a song from deep within her heart. Her dobro nearly articulates words in the phrasing of the melodic lines. This one instrumental also proves that Cindy can create, for lead, and for solo. This one cut, emotionally accessible and pure, belongs with Bill Frisell's CD "Good Dog, Happy Man"; and I believe that, long after we've passed, and if Cindy does not finally write the lyrics herself, "Locust Grove" will inspire a succession of songwriters.
