WyCliff deserves a grammy for this one. It's a juicy kind of jazz. What can I say, Excellent! Wonderful! thoroughly entertaining! It's April's rain and Spring sunshine. Crisp sounds, gone to town. Such a joy, I thoroughly enjoyed.Make no mistake, it's very clear, that a Grammy's due Here!!

Another greatly underestimated disk from Wycliffe.,

What Wycliffe does is extraordinary. He does stuff with the trombone that nobody else does, and he keeps it in the true tradition of jazz. It's too bad you can't hear track 12 on the listening samples, because believe me, this guy can cook.

Track 12 is unbelievable! Excellent ensamble sounds and a wide range of styles from track to track. It is phenominal what Wycliffe can do!

I had the pleasure of meeting Wycliffe after hearing him speak at the most recent International Trombone Conference. His clinic was all about singing, and singing through the instrument. He'd do a scat solo, and then play it back perfectly on the instrument. The yelps, growls, whatnot that may at first confuse fit perfectly if you think of it in a singing context. Too often jazz instrumentalists stay only within the confines of their instruments - tenor sax players play scales fast, trombone players slide around like fools - but Wycliffe transcends that. There's a reason Wynton hand-picked this cat to play right out of high school. Check him out. This CD will rock your world.

I saw Wycliffe playing in Wynton Marsalis' band at Middlebury College a few years ago. I picked up this CD after the concert and have played it many times. I play trombone too and I try to imitate Wycliffe's style; it really makes practice fun! I play along with Mood Indigo and It Don't Mean a Thing, and I just drool on myself with my tongue hangin out when he plays "What?!" (how does he do that??). Being a piano player, I also appreciate Eric Reed's touch on the keyboard.
The standards on this CD are fresh and swing greatly. Wycliffe's originals jam and are a pleasure to listen to. You just sit back and close your eyes and let the music take you for a ride. The recording quality is excellent -- very crisp and well-mixed. There's not a bad track on this whole CD. If you like combo jazz, swing, dixie, blues -- trombones! -- buy this CD!

Best jazz trombone soloist alive!!!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Slidin Home (Audio CD)
Wycliffe Gordon in my opinion has to be the best jazz bone soloist alive today. Raw energy and amazing technical ability are conveyed in every note of his playing. The thing about Wycliffe is that he doesn't just play bop, or swing. He also plays some dixieland, and he doesn't lack in any category of jazz at all. My favorite track on this CD is #6 (New Awlins). I like the fact that he's remembering and passing on a legacy of music. This is a must have CD for those searching for something new, different, unique, and uplifting.

before i heard wycliffe play, i just thought the trombone was an ooozing instrument that could only get extremely loud and annoying. but gordon makes it so musical. these selections are outstanding, i personaly love Green Chimneys. All in all, if you dont own any wycliffe gordon cds, you are really missing out, but dont worry, Slidin' home is a great way to start your gordon collection. 5 HUGE stars *****

I am not sure what to make of Gordon. Is he just showing off on this disc or do his growls, yelps and groans add up to something. I will say that as a trombone fan, you get to hear him do things that no one has ever done on record. (Al Grey maybe?). Still, some of it leave me cold, as if the songs exist just as a means for him to display his talents. Does he delve into the soul of Monk's Green Chimneys, or is he just putting christmas lights around it? Ofcourse, finding the heart of a Monk song is a lot to ask of any artist, but then this is an artist with exceptional skills. Question is, does it end there? .
