Book Description

Sliding Void (Book 1 of the Sliding Void science fiction series)

DESCRIPTION

Captain Lana Fiveworlds has a hell of a lot of problems.

She's sliding void in an ageing seven-hundred-year-old space ship, scrabbling around the edges of civilised space trying to find a cargo lucrative enough to pay her bills without proving so risky that it'll kill her. She's got an alien religious freak for a navigator, an untrustworthy android for a first mate, a disgraced lizard for a trade negotiator and a deserter from the fleet acting as her chief engineer.

And that was well before an ex-crewman turns up wanting Lana to rescue a barbarian prince from a long-failed colony world.

Unfortunately for Lana, the problems she doesn't know about are even more dangerous. In fact, they just might be enough to destroy Lana's rickety but much-loved vessel, the Gravity Rose, and jettison her and her crew into the void without a spacesuit.

But there's one thing you can never tell an independent space trader. That's the odds...

From the Author

Sliding Void is the first tale in my Sliding Void serialization - and it is part one of a three book plot arc (so you should read Transference Station next, and finish with Red Sun Bleeding). It was great fun writing and I really hope that you love it. Don't forget to leave a review with your thoughts on what you liked and would enjoy seeing more of... or even less of. Happy reading.

Great start on your debut. An interesting bunch of characters, with a great story line. Well written. Left the author with lots more to say in Book 2.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fine Start September 19, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I quite enjoyed Hunt's space opera. This is the first of a serial, so don't expect a complete story. It introduces interesting characters, a good back story, and some conflicts to get the series going. Hunt is a capable writer and the story is professionally edited and laid out - so you are getting more value than the usual $.99 self-published short on eBay. If you want solid space opera, told by a competent, best selling author, this series is a good bet.

4.0 out of 5 stars Chocolate for the mind May 26, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Stephen Hunt is insane, in the best possible way. I grabbed this ebook as a free offer, then after reading it immediately bought all his other titles*. My only disappointment is that there were too few of them. Write moar. NOW. Do not risk the wrath of the fiction-addicted. ;)

Good science fiction asks, "What if...?", and Stephen Hunt supplies heaping handfuls of possibiities, all mixed in together like a riot of differently-coloured sweets. Some tang on your tongue, others tickle your fancy, and yet others indulge your analytical tendencies as you track an oddly-patterned sticky web of unlikelihood. As another review says, this man's imagination can probably be seen from space. After reading Hunt's ebooks, one can only hope any interested alien species have a pronounced funny-bone and a talent for parallel processing.

* The reasonably-priced ones, as the Jackelian series are currently priced out of my budget by what has to be a Legacy Publisher.

5.0 out of 5 stars A most ambitious novella May 30, 2013
By Shorgik
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This work opens the Sliding Void sequence and gives the reader a high octane introduction to the sardonic Alliance universe as created by Hunt. He has already proven himself a master of the fantasy genre and with this work, he set out to prove he is no slouch either at science fiction (an act in which he largely succeeds). Onto the second book in the series now, Transference Station. Stay tuned for my review of that one.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic start April 30, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Fast paced, it kept me engaged. I like a story that explains things as it goes along. The author does not spoon feed his audience. I look forward to reading the rest of this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent piece of fictional tale! November 25, 2012
By bigboss
Format:Kindle Edition
I love reading science fiction stories. Ever since my childhood, I have a passion for science fiction tales. Recently, adding a new tale to my collection of science fiction stories, I purchased the kindle edition of "Sliding Void (Novella 1 of the Sliding Void science fiction series)". The story revolves around the protagonist of the story, Captain Lana Fiveworlds, who is struggling through a lot of problems in her life. She is struggling with a 700-year old space ship, which is scrabbling through the edges of a civilized space world. Everything was still well until the ex-crewmen encounters Lana again to rescue a barbarian prince from the hurdles of a colony world.
However, the problems turn out much more severe than expected. Undoubtedly, one of the best fiction stories I had ever read. Excellent plot and highly engaged characterization, the author brings in compilation of different colorful events and manages to engage the reader till the end. You would be busy selecting the apt answers from the all whole of options supplied by the author for the question "What if?" The imagination of the author is incredible and by far the best till date. The elaborate description of the alien characters is captivating and enthralls the reader throughout!

More About the Author

Stephen Hunt is a fantasy, science fiction, crime and thriller author who lives in Spain and the UK. His current fantasy works are within the 'Far-called' series, published by Gollancz (the genre imprint of Orion/Hachette) . . . with adventures set on Pellas, a massive and fascinating planet where radio signals take centuries to be passed along a chain of guild stations, and merchant caravans can travel for millennia without retracing their steps.

The first two exciting novels in this series are 'In Dark Service' and 'Foul Tides Turning', and focus on the Carnehan family, whose lives are torn apart in a terrible slave raid on the town of Northhaven.

Hunt is arguably best known for his best-selling Jackelian series of novels from HarperCollins, also the publisher of J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis in the UK, the success of the first of which, 'The Court of the Air', gave rise to a genre called steampunk.

The Jackelian world is a fantasy adventure set in a far-future Earth where the passage of time has erased almost all memory of our current world from history. Electricity is now unreliable and classed as a dark power, with many of the nations of the world existing at a Victorian level of development and relying on steam-power, mechanical nanotechnology and biotechnology to survive and prosper.

It is an age of strange creatures, flashing blades, steammen servants, airship battles and high adventure.

Each novel is written as a stand-alone work, but share the same world and many of the same characters who criss-cross between the novels (a technique shared with fellow British fantasy author Terry Pratchett and his Discworld series).

Foreign language and international editions of the six novels of the Jackelian series have been sold to Tor Books (USA), Albin Michel (France), Verlagsgruppe Random House (Germany), Enterbrain Manga and Anime (Japan), Edições Saída de Emergência (Portugal), Paidós (Spain), AST (Russia), and the Anhui Literature and Art Publishing House (China).

Stephen maintains his own web site over at www.StephenHunt.net and when he is not writing, he can be found indulging in such interests as cooking, gardening, collecting comic-books, and building his collections of genre novels.

He still sometimes writes for the magazine he helped to found, www.SFcrowsnest.org.uk, the first science fiction web site.
