About the Author
Alan M. Engler, M.D., is a board-certified plastic surgeon in private practice in New York City. He is a graduate of Yale University and Columbia University's College of Physicians and surgeons. Dr. Engler is on the faculty of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York and is a member of a number of professional societies, including the American College of Surgeons, and the Lipoplasty Society of North America.

From Chapter 4: The final result of liposuction depends not only on the amount and distribution of the fat removed, but on the ability of the skin and remaining subcutaneous fat to redrape into a new contour. This phenomenon occurs naturally; with any form of significant weight loss after a significant gain, including pregnancy (which is an extreme example), the skin is forced to adapt to a new underlying framework and to to redrape itself. This is essentially what occurs with liposuction, although to a much lesser degree. The fat is removed while leaving the skin and a supporting framework of tissue behind. As part of the healing process, the skin gradually sinks down into its new shape. This helps to explain why it may take several weeks or months to see the final results of the surgery. From Chapter 5: Anyone can undergo liposuction, but there are some people who will be more likely to benefit from the surgery than others. realistic expectations are, as with all types of cosmetic surgery, an integral part of the equation.
From Chapter 8 (What Will the Neighbors Say?): Of course, a few people may figure out exactly what happened. Sometimes they know so much because they or someone they know well has had the same thing done; other times they are just well informed, observant and "on to it". What you tell people is up to you. You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time. Sometime you can even fool mom.
