More About the Author

Named "Yoga Rebel" by the New York Times, Tara Stiles has inspired a wide audience around the world with her relatable approaches to yoga, meditation, exercise, awareness, nutrition, and everyday well-being. Tara is the founder and owner of Strala Yoga, widely known for its unpretentious, inclusive, and straightforward approach to yoga and meditation. She is the personal yoga instructor to Deepak Chopra, with whom she's collaborated to create several apps and DVDs, among other projects. Jane Fonda named Tara "the new face of fitness" and Vanity Fair declared her the "Coolest Yoga Instructor Ever."

Tara has been featured in Vogue, Elle, Harpers Bazaar, Lucky, InStyle, Esquire, Shape, Self, Fit Perez, and Fit Sugar, and profiled by The New York times, Times of India, The Times (UK), and Sweeden's Dagnes Nyheter. Tara is the designer and face of Reebok's yoga lifestyle line, launching globally in 2013. She is the author of two top selling books: Slim Calm Sexy Yoga and Yoga Cures and she has created several DVD series collaborations with Jane Fonda, Deepak Chopra, Tia Mowry, Brooklyn Decker and ELLE Magazine. She recently released an epic six hour complete yoga encyclopedia DVD series called This is Yoga. Recently, the Alliance For A Healthier Generation, Bill Clinton's initiative to combat childhood obesity, tapped Tara to help promote activity to the 14,000+ participating schools.

As Vanity Fair noted, "Tara Stiles has got to be the coolest yoga instructor ever."

"One of the things I like about her is her ability to make yoga accessible to people who might be scared of it or think it might be too esoteric,"
--Jane Fonda

"We are both nonconformists who have incurred the wrath of traditional yogis," Mr. Chopra said of Ms. Stiles, whom he now considers his personal instructor. "A lot of the criticism is resentment of her rapid success. I have been doing yoga for 30 years. I have had teachers of all kinds. Taking lessons from her has been more useful to me than taking yoga from anyone else.
--Deepak Chopra

5.0 out of 5 stars Love It! September 13, 2010
By Elle
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am 50 years old and out of shape. I've been really bummed out since I have had trouble finding some type of exercise I can stick with. Then I found Tara Stiles on youtube, and I got hooked. I always avoided yoga, thinking it was too difficult for someone like me, but she shows even the most out of shape person how to get started and how to feel comfortable with where you are now. I got the book, and it's a wonderful book on it's own, since it gives some really good ideas, tips, and encouragement. Coupled with her youtube videos, it's really all you need to start a yoga practice on your own time, in your own place if that's what you want. (It's good to see the poses in action, and to use the book as a reference for more detail behind the poses.) It also gives information for more advanced poses, so I think it would be great even if you're not a beginner like me. Her enthusiasm is contagious, and if someone can make me enthusiastic about exercise, that's saying something. I have also started to use her meditation and breathing tips, which I probably wouldn't have done in the past either. I think it's great she is bringing yoga to everyone. I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in improving mental and physical health. And she makes it fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tara Stiles Rocks September 6, 2010
Format:Paperback
Slim Calm Sexy Yoga is a great book for anyone interested in the benefits of yoga. In her first book Ms. Tara Stiles talks about what yoga can do for your mind, body and soul. Tara will teach the many benefits of doing yoga on a regular basis. Ms. Stiles says yoga can help you lose weight, improve your memory and have a better orgasm. She shares great tips and advice on how yoga can help with headaches, carpal tunnel syndrome (hello too much time online hehe) and heart disease. She shows the different yoga poses and tells you how often you should do them to heal whatever ails you. Tara gives a brief introduction about what led her to yoga. This book is a wonderful reliable reference guide, great pictures and good reading for anyone interested in yoga. One of my favorite chapters in the book is chapter two. She talks about the three important principles of yoga. Those three principles are breathing, meditation and alignment. Tara makes these points because we need to slow down and take some time for ourselves. All of the chapters you will find tips from Tara that I found to be useful. Tara recently started a v log on [...]. I think its great and Tara rocks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get excited about yoga! October 30, 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Tara Stiles teaches yoga in a light-hearted realistic way. She understands that we can't all bend our bodies into pretzels and teaches us to accept ourselves where we are. She teaches yoga in a playful way. I have never been a big sports person, and always disliked running as I have asthma and vertigo. Yoga to the rescue! Yoga is not just stretching - it is a workout! I love this book because it is divided up into different sequences for different goals or problems (i.e. arm toning or insomnia). And, as per her teachings, you can do each sequence in just 15 minutes a day. This book makes doing yoga easy: the pictures and instructions are clear, the tone is motivating, and you can't say you don't have 15 minutes to spare!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent yoga book with great photos of poses October 19, 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've been practicing yoga for nearly a year and still very new to yoga. This book has large colorful photos showing each of the yoga poses along with instructions. The photos are especially helpful to understand the poses. Too many books have too many words and lack photos to show you how to properly perform a pose.

The design of the book is beautiful with large easy to read typeface and great photos to accompany each pose. If you are a visual learner, then this is the yoga book for you.

The book also has program designs if you want to:

improve flexibility
build stamina
improve strength
deal with back problems
allergy problems
headaches

CONS: Book design: What I don't like about the book is that it is a bit too glossy and light reflects off the pages. Also there is not enough space between the text and the spine of the book. I have to fold down the pages to see the text closer to the book spine.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not really for beginners October 9, 2010
By lisa
Format:Paperback
I suppose if I had more yoga experience, this would be a great book. There are very few suggestions for yoga novices. I was expecting photos of how to use blocks and straps since I'm not quite as flexible as Tara. If you're looking for a starting base of yoga knowledge, don't get this book ... yet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent but probably not for beginners December 26, 2010
By MS
Format:Paperback
If you have never done yoga before, the book is probably not for you. And for beginners I think it would be difficult to start with a book anyway; you might want to start with a class or at least a video to make sure you are doing it right.
Those that have done yoga already will most likely be familiar with most of the poses, but never fear, unless you are an expert, there are quite a few challenging poses, and it will take a while to master them (at least for me).

Pros
- I like that the book is not preachy or judgmental. It has a nice conversational tone.
- Also, there are short routines at the back of the book and you can choose to do just one of a few depending on the time you have or how lazy you feel on a given day :) And even if you do just one routine, which will not take more than 15 minutes, you will feel great.
- Even though I know that yoga should be done in quiet or with some music that helps with concentration, I find that I can do some poses while watching TV, which makes me feel a little less guilty about it.

Cons
- For some of the more challenging poses, I missed modifiers. For example, if I am not strong enough to hold a pose for 5 or 10 deep breaths, how could I make it less challenging before building the required strength?

In any case, overall, I think this is a great book. In fact this is now my go to yoga book and it is always open next to TV inviting me to unroll the matt and get busy with the exercises.
