5.0 out of 5 stars If you want to increase your health and lose weight, read this book, January 1, 2012
This review is from: Slim Forever (Hardcover)
Robert Harris draws together, facts and scientific details to come up with an eating plan which ensures you lose weight, and increase your health and well being. The core information in this book, and the principles behind weight loss are easy to follow. There are tables at the back so you can calculate the carbohydrate value of each 100grams of food you are eating. Based one eating more protein (eggs, fish, cheese and meat) than carbohydrates, and including a simple daily exercise programme, you will lose 1 kilogram a week if you follow the plan precisely. If you deviate slightly, the weight loss is slightly less. Harris describes the physiology when you eat carbohydrate from sugars (fruit, wine, pasta, rice, and root vegetables) - essentially the sugars from these foods convert to fat, and you won't burn stored fat. He promotes eating carbohydrates from vegetables only during the weight loss aspect of this eating regime. Vegetables with few carbohydrates include lettuce, tomatoes, asparagus and mushrooms. When you consume on a daily basis sufficient carbohydrates for your daily activity, and increase your activity slightly, Harris maintains your body converts stored fat to energy, hence daily weight loss of around 100 - 200 grams.

Using this book I found it easy to construct a varied eating programme e.g. scrambled eggs and bacon for breakfast, 100g of cheese or small tin of tuna with lemon and pepper for lunch and then chicken, lemon, mint and lettuce salad, roasted tomatoes and asparagus for dinner. For those who like to know the scientific details behind the programme, there is plenty of information, and for those who need the spare details, there are enough guidelines in the first chapter, and the food charts included to keep you on track. A simple to follow book filled with information on how your body functions, with energy in, being less than energy expended, and as Harris points out, by eating this balance between protein and carbohydrate, you don't get hungry. Harris' experience in working with overweight adults comes through as does his knowledge, which many of us already know, but frequently forget to follow.
