Excellent 6-count swing,
By Tom Barta (Chapel Hill, NC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Slim Gaillard 1945, Vol. 2 (Audio CD)
I first encountered this disc when I discovered that my six-count Swing instructor was using four tracks off of it in class. Slim Gaillard writes slow, fun, novelty songs, most of which are in swing tempo. He has a sense of humor and pitches his jazz to the crowd in a manner reminiscent to me of Screamin' Jay Hawkins' treatment of the blues. Songs like "Cement Mixer", "Scotchin' with Soda" and "Atomic Cocktail" are real gems. I would recommend this album to anyone caught up in the current Squirrel Nut Zipper/ Cherry Poppin' Daddy/ Royal Crown Revue noveau-dance scene.

This review is from: Slim Gaillard 1945, Vol. 2 (Audio CD)
Slim Gaillard recorded this collection of tunes in December of 1945 under three small labels: Cadet, Atomic, and Bel-Tone. Even if you don't care for Slims hilarious lyrics and vout-talk, you'll love contributions by Bam Brown, Zutty Singleton, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Jack McVea, and Dodo Marmarosa. The sound quality is 1945, not too crispy, not without static. But the music is soooooo jivin' and groovy, you can't let that keep you from this atomic jazz cocktail. Dancers, this is an absolute MUST-have artist to have in the archives.
