The re-seller who sold this will always be on my trusted list.Well-shipped, came new and works fine as it should. Buyers remember to de-solder the little blob of metal on the left side (refer to the product picture) of the laser assembly before connecting the assembly.

Bought this to replace a dead lens on my PS2 Slim... At first this replacement looked the same as the original. When installed correctly it solved all my disc read errors and I was able to play long sessions again. But the lens died in 2-3 months with spare use. After that I learned that some lenses are made in china, look like the original, work like the original (at first) but work for 3 months at the most. This seems to be one of those lenses.

I've never done anything like this before. I'm 33 years old and have never soldered or desoldered a joint or component before. However, I am a big DIY guy. I always figure that it is cheaper, or if not, the same price to do it yourself and you get a tool and some knowledge out of the escapade. I went out and bought a soldering iron (Weller at HD for $17) and a solder sucker ($10 at Fry's).The soldering iron I bought came with four different tips. I used the fine-point tip for the laser solder point. Since I don't have a small vice or small hobby clamp or anything, I found it easier to mount the laser then desolder the point. I had the soldering iron in one hand and the solder sucker in the other. As soon as the solder turned liquid...pop!....sucked it right up. I put the PS2 back together and, to my surprise, it worked right away. So less than $40 fixed my PS2 like new. The only thing I thought was weird is that the motor is now noisy. You can hear it pretty loud when it moves the laser. The only thing I can think I did wrong was over-tighten something. I am used to fixing my car and truck in which parts fit tough and tight whereas electronics fit smooth and snug. If anybody knows why the motor got loud, please let me know.

Replaced my old PS2 laser and it reads great now. As mentioned in a previous post, you should de-solder the blob on the left. Use Google for reference pictures and instructions, or just use your old lens as a reference.

anti static solder blob needs to be removed (easy for me, did in first try swiped the tip of the soldering iron thru the ball nice and slow and it sucked all the solder right up onto the tip) works perfectly with original disks and backups (didnt test ps1 games yet)

Before installing the component, you need to remove the solder until you see two line connection parallel to each other. For me, the item did not work but it was worth the investment to try.

Exactly as described. Took a few times to realize I had to remove the solder, works perfectly though. Next I need to figure something out about the overheating problem...

This just doesn't work. With this laser in, the drive will not even spin up. Put back the old laser, drive spins up.I even bought a brand new ribbon cable to go with it. And I did not forget to remove the anti-static solder blob. Thanks for nothing. |
