This review is from: Slim Rails Through the Sand: Southern Pacific's Narrow Gauge (Perfect Paperback)
Only half of this book is what the title and cover present. The 2nd half is titled "Modeler's Portfolio" and contains some general information about model railroading along with pictures and measurements of different pieces of rolling stock and buildings. On one hand I was happy to have that info as it's relevant to me. On the other hand this is more like a 50 page book with a 60 page appendix if you know what I mean.
The books text is somewhat simplistic. It breezes over some topics and I found it hard to follow the actual history of this railroad as sometimes the text jumps in time periods -- it was a bit confusing in that regard. The cover notes that there are 200 photos in the book, which is accurate. Many of these photos however I've already seen online or in other resources. The actual text content of the book is rather slim. I read the history portion in about an hour. Overall this book is "OK". It's not one of the best railroad books I've ever read but it's not bad either. Considering Mallory Ferrell's book of this railroad sells for $175+ this is a much more affordable choice if this line is your interest. |
