4.0 out of 5 stars Slim Fast is Evil, I'm Telling You, Evil!
It's been a couple of weeks since we received a case of these SlimFast Souble-Dutch Chocolate bars, and I will say right off the bat that I'm going to miss them when they're finally gone. I first opened a slimfast bar box when I returned home hungry. The first thing I noticed was the TINY size of the bars in the box. Is this one size fits all? I'm a pretty tall guy. One of these bars is NEVER going to do it!!

The second thing I noticed were the ingredients...

1. CORN SYRUP.

2. HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP.

These are the first two ingredients!!! THAT MEANS THESE BARS AS MADE MOSTLY OF CORN SYRUP!! It has been my experience that what they say about glycemic indexes is absolutely true. Anything that is very sweet will cause a person to feel much more hunger later. Plus, do a search for "High Fructose Corn Syrup" to find out if it is good for you.

THERE IS ALSO PLENTY OF HYDROGENATED PALM KERNEL OIL!! Do a search for "hydrogenated palm kernel oil health risks"

AND LOOK AT THE CARB TO PROTEIN RATIO OF A 23g PEANUT BUTTER SLIMFAST SNACK BAR (FROM THE SLIMFAST SITE)...

Sugars 13g

Dietary Fiber 0g

Carbohydrates 15g

Protein 1g

Wow! Again, anything that is high in carbs and low in protein will cause a person to feel much more hungry later!!!! The Opposite of what you want when you are dieting.

These are tasty bars. Much more like a candy bar in flavor than a granola bar, but apart from the fact that they are tiny, I do not "get" the name "Slim"fast. ANY mini size regular candy bar would do exactly the same thing. And that's why I gave them 1 Star!!

Even better to find any good protein bar made with ingredients that are a lot more nutritious for the human body. Any bar that is high in protein and/or fiber, and low in carbs and sugars would curb the hunger far longer than these ever could...

For Example, MY Personal Favorite Protein Bar happens to be Pure Protein Bars. I am NOT making any money telling you this (wish I could). I only prefer Pure Protein bars because they do NOT have calcium caseinate protein, which my digestion has never handled very well...

LOOK AT THE PROTEIN TO CARB RATIO OF A 50g PURE PROTEIN BAR (CHOCOLATE PEANUT BUTTER)...

4.0 out of 5 stars Slim Fast is Evil, I'm Telling You, Evil!, November 6, 2009
This review is from: SlimFast 100 Calorie, Double-Dutch Chocolate, Snack Bar 6pk, 4.86-Ounce Boxes (Pack of 8) (Health and Beauty)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
It's been a couple of weeks since we received a case of these SlimFast Souble-Dutch Chocolate bars, and I will say right off the bat that I'm going to miss them when they're finally gone. Of course, every Halloween, when we're stuck with a bowl full of Reeces, Almond Joy, and Snickers Fun Size bars, we miss those when they're gone, too. Chocolate, after all, is a seratonin-releaser that makes us happy, and a few gleeful bites of happiness is what these SlimFast bars are.

These bars are just shy of 3" long, 1" wide, and 5/8" deep. That's about four small snack-size bites. I can easily wipe a bar out in two bites. At 100 calories, 30 of them are from fat, almost half of which is saturated fat... no trans fat, no cholesterol. There are 16 grams of carbs; 7 grams sugars, 1 gram protein, and 2 grams fiber. On the SlimFast 3*2*1 Plan, you can eat three of these a day (information on this plan can be found at [...]).

The first time my wife had one, she was a chocosnob and said "I suppose this could pass for chocolate in a pinch." The next day, she had another and cursed them for how good they were. They're a little like Whatchamacallit bars (do they still exist?) without the peanut butter flavor (and I think SlimFast has them in PB as well)... they have a moderately dark "chocolate flavored coating" and the insides are a fudgey, airy crispy-crunchies that make for a good, satisfying chewing experience.

The plain truth about these bars to me is that A) I think they're quite tasty B) I don't think the nutritional information is all that great, especially considering that C) people like me will always want to have a second right after the first. And perhaps a third... The whole point, of course, is that the flavor of these things will satisfy the craving after those three or four bites, so they're great when you pack one for work, but when they're in a cabinet nearby, and you know it, then willpower needs to be exercised... and when you're on a diet, isn't that what you need anyway?

I really have enjoyed these bars, and aside from the sheer snacking and flavor considerations, I should have been on a diet to better evaluate the diet considerations. I'm not a SlimFast dieter, so I can only comment on the pure enjoyment factors of these bars, and I can honestly give them 4-out-of-5 stars for that. Like I said... I'm gonna miss them when they're gone!

5.0 out of 5 stars These are too good., October 28, 2009
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I loved these little slimfast bars. They taste a lot like a butterfingers. They are perfect for a little treat. The only problem is that you will want to eat more than one. I also felt that they were bigger than other 100 calories candy bars. These are not a meal replacement bar but a candy treat.

3.0 out of 5 stars Better than a candy bar., November 10, 2009

Personally, if these were going to form a core part of my diet (as SlimFast would suggest) I don't think I'd be too thrilled with the ingredients that include high fructose corn syrup and partially hydrogenated palm kernal oil. I prefer my basic nutrition to include an ingredient list that's more akin to what I can find in my kitchen, rather than a chemistry lab.

So with that cranky bit of diet philosophy out of the way, I would suggest that dieters consider these snack bars as... uh... between meal snacks. Let's face it, we need a little treat now and then and these will induce less guilt than a more traditional candy bar, with fewer calories. The taste is just fine, nice and chocolatey. And I dare say that they left me just a tad more satisfied than a pack of M&Ms or a Milky Way bar might (with far fewer calories to contend with).

4.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT FLAVOR!!!, October 25, 2009
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
These taste almost exactly like a Butterfinger, but a little softer. I am not sure I buy into the Slim Fast plan, and it has a fair amount of sugar in it, but I think this is a great snack to have in your desk drawer as a sweet fix that is MUCH healthier than actually eating the Butterfinger.

3.0 out of 5 stars for $0.61 each, a little pricey, October 24, 2009
This review is from: SlimFast 100 Calorie, Double-Dutch Chocolate, Snack Bar 6pk, 4.86-Ounce Boxes (Pack of 8) (Health and Beauty)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Slim Fast has rolled out it's new 3-2-1 plan: basically buy and eat their products for most of your day, through 3 "snacks" (100 calories) and 2 "meals" (200 calories) then 1 sensible dinner (500 calories) on your own. This plan sounds great on paper, though for a nursing mom like me is no where near enough calories for a day. But I digress. The taste is what everyone else mentioned, sweet but short. It's basically over in 2-3 bites, and you are left thinking it should have been more. But follow it up with a big glass of water, it makes it a bit more filling. But then that sweet taste is gone. The fiber content is 2g. But is IS tasty and chocolately, especially compared to a lot of other bars out there that taste like cardboard. Give it a try to see if it works for you. For me, I am not following the entire plan because it's just too full of chemicals, but I will buy them once in a while.

2.0 out of 5 stars It's a Candy Bar - don't be fooled by Snack bar name - tough on yer teeth too!, October 23, 2009
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I assumed when I ordered these that they would be a snack-sized version of other Slim Fast Peanut Butter snack bars with 3 or 5 grams of protein and that slight cake-ish texture to the inside. Boy was I wrong! What I found instead was a Clarke Bar or Butterfinger Bar cleverly disguised as a healthy snack choice. The filling of the bar is the same peanut butter, sugar and corn syrup recipe you find in a Buttferinger Bar. That sticky mess gets heated and then pulled and kneaded like taffy to bring out the glassine like effect. It's then heated some more, cut into "snack sized" loaves and enrobed with chocolate. Just like the candy bars it is intended to mimic, it has a nice crunch but once in the mouth, degenerates into a sticky mess capable of pulling out fillings, sticking to bridgework and become welded behind your molars where even a toothbrush can't get it off. I hate to scrape the reamins off with my finger nail and then power up my Waterpik Ultra Dental Water Jet to flush out the sticky bits I couldn't reach with dental floss.

I'm giving this a bad rating not because it didn't taste good because it did. I simply think Slim Fast is delusional or deliberately trying to put one over on it's consumers. The "100 Calorie" packaging of candy products that are clearly candy may in fact be a helpful portion control device for people with a sweet tooth but for Slim fast to label this a diet product and a "snack Bar" is deception at it's best. It's candy. Candy. CANDY. As Candy, it offers no real help to anyone looking for a healthy snack to quite cravings or hunger pangs. This is a High-Glycemic index "food" that could expose consumers to even more powerful cravings once their blood sugar dips again.

The highest ingredients by weight in this order are: Sugar, Corn Syrup, dry roasted peanuts. One bar has a mere 1 gram of protein and 16 grams of carbs, 13 of which come from sugar. 1/3 of the calories come from fat.

My advice is to find an energy bar or snack bar with a better protein content. if you are looking for a 100 calorie serving, cut them in half since most run around 200 calories. Cut them in half, stick them in snack sized ziplok bags and toss them in your lunch bag. Viola - instant portion control without having to worry about your dental work.

This bar has a rich chocolate taste which can satisfy serious chocolate craving for 100 calorie snacks in-between meals. For those on a low-carb diet, however, be aware that there are 16g of carbs, of which 7g come from sugar. I would give this item 5 stars if it had used a sugar substitute such as aspartame or maltitol.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tasty and crunchy Slim-Fast snack bars, October 18, 2009

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
These Slim-Fast Peanut Butter Crunch Time bars are really, really tasty. They have a light crunchy texture, and the peanutty taste that reminds you of ButterFinger candy bars - without all the calories. The bars are 100 calories each. These bars are part of the Slim-Fast 3-2-1 plan to lose weight. The Crunch Time bars would make a perfect evening snack - think dessert - to help keep you on track. I don't know how well the plan works but these should certainly help. They were a real hit at our house and we will re-order them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Small yet satisfying, December 21, 2009
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
When opening the box, the first thing that came to mind was, Gosh these things are tiny. I have eaten SlimFast products before including other types of snack bars. The snack bars I had eaten though weren't as tiny as these were. Therefore I was surprised that the small size was supposed to curb my appetite between meals.

Well the bars were rather tasty. It was more granola bar like than candy bar, resembling a Kudos. The chocolate is satisfying mixed with the nut flavor. It was gone in a couple of bites. I ate it around 3pm, an hour and a half after lunch, which is normally when I start getting a little hungry again. It did satisfy the immediate cravings, although I do wish it had lasted a little longer. I tried it again the next day with smaller bites and that seemed to help more.

The only thing is, there are only 6 bars in the box so it can be a bit pricey if you snack more than once in a day.
