"Slimmer is a well-researched, very well-written book that we have no reservations recommending. Papas' new version of the Mediterranean diet is not only a delicious way to eat, but also heart-healthy, fairly inexpensive and entirely sustainable. The more than 80 recipes included look delicious, creative and surprisingly healthy. And the clearly-outlined diet plan divided up into cycles makes the nine-week process of weight loss seem more attainable and easy to follow. "We also love that Papas is not only a registered dietitian who has followed the diet to lose more than 100 pounds himself, but is also the founder of a health and diet center and Greece where he has successfully prescribed the diet to thousands if not millions of people who have achieved weight loss and a better quality of life with the Slimmer approach. "In summary, we highly recommend this book to anyone looking to slim down the healthy and happy way." —Diets In Review
"Papas grew up in Athens, Greece a slim and popular young man. But during his first year in college, stress and depression drove him “to reach for junk food for comfort and chocolate for fulfillment;” in one year, he gained 110 pounds. Desperate to find a solution, he switched his major from economics to nutrition, lost the added weight, and began developing this delicious program, a 'southern Greek diet…revised along the lines of modern science and nutrition.' The diet is based on meals that emphasize vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and protein, and Papas dutifully includes recipes for dishes like turkey phyllo pot pie, Mediterranean chicken fricassée, and garlic aioli shrimp. If readers follow the 'Slimmer' plan, which is organized into three 21-day cycles, Papas claims most dieters will drop 10% of their body weight in the first month, and 5% each month after. Built into the program are 'Free Days' and 'Happy Moments' (things like ice cream, wine, and coffee), elements that anyone used to strict diet regimens will surely appreciate. Even those unwilling to follow Papas’s plan to the letter will find plenty of cogent advice and delicious dishes here." —Publishers Weekly (June) "The recipe section is fantastic." —The Suburban Jungle
"This easy-to-follow plan will allow you to get rid of those unwanted pounds with incredibly flavorful and satisfying meals, full of sustaining, wholesome foods."—Chic Galleria
"Papas' own success and his easy-to-follow menu plan should inspire anyone who wants to eat healthier and lose weight. The recipes are simple and full of fresh flavor, and the book is written in a easy-to-read style." —Bookchickdi

Activating Your Goal: How to Get to and Maintain Your Ideal Weight
Harry Papas is the author of the bestselling Mediterranean diet book in Greece, Slimmer: The New Mediterranean Way to Lose Weight. He is certified dietitian and lost 110 pounds on the Mediterranean diet plan he created.
As a young man growing up in Athens, Greece, Harry Papas had an enviable life. He looked good, felt good, was popular and smart, and saw nothing but continued success and happiness in his future. Then something changed. He gained 110 pounds in one year. Many people gain weight as they get older, but what happened to Papas, and what happens to millions of people around the world, was more sudden and drastic. When Papas entered college, he became stressed, depressed, lonely, and bored. He turned to food for comfort and the pounds began to pile on. He tried various diets, but once he gained 110 pounds in one year, he decided to create his own weight loss technique. Papas created the Slimmer lifestyle inspired by his research and Mediterranean diet roots... and it worked!
Papas became a certified dietitian and lost all the excess weight- and never gained it back. Slimmer: The New Mediterranean Way to Lose Weight is the bestselling diet book in Greece and is now climbing the charts in the U.S. The Mediterranean diet has been proven to reduce heart risk and prevent cardiovascular disease (New England Journal of Medicine).
Harry Papas resides in Greece and helps others lose weight and find joy every day. He strongly believes LOVE ALWAYS WINS.
I've been on the "Slimmer Plan" now for about 3 weeks. I've lost 6 pounds (with 6 more to go) and my husband has lost 10 (he wants to lose a few more as well). It's a terrific program and at heart, the Slimmer plan is a program of eating healthy for life. I think it would be great no matter how much weight you have to lose. (The author's story is very inspiring. He personally went from 280 pounds on this plan to 170 and looks great - pictures of him are on the book's web site). This has been a top-selling book in Greece and Europe over the last several years and I see why. I highly recommend it.
The meals and recipes in this book are really great. Reallllly great. In fact, I would recommend this book to anyone just as a cookbook. There are three cycles (Cycle A, Cycle B and Cycle C), each representing three weeks' worth of menus. The recipes are simple and awesome. They were all easy to make. For example, the dinners for the first week are: Slimmer Chicken a la Crème, Spaghetti Bolognese, Mediterranean Burger, Pepperoni Pita Pizza, Sole with Oregano and Lemon, Easy Seafood Risotto, and a free day. (I do wish there were a few more pictures but all the dishes did turn out looking good.)
I also liked that the menu plans have food with healthy carbs, which, at least for us, makes it much easier to stick to. I don't think I've ever been on a diet where you could eat Spaghetti Bolognese and Pepperoni Pizza. Another example with carbs is breakfast - a typical breakfast is milk, whole grain cereal, a slice of whole wheat bread, an orange and one ounce of cheese. The recipes required mostly simple, easy ingredients consistent with a Mediterranean diet - chicken, fish, salad, etc.... A few recipes really represented a new way of cooking for me that I'd never thought of, for example, you use pita bread as the base of a pizza for dinner. It is delicious and easy, and I don't think I'll be buying expensive pre-made pizza crusts again. Another example is that you use Greek yogurt in the Spaghetti Bolognese in place of cream. It tasted and looked great. Sometimes real cream in Bolognese sauce has a heavy, coated feel, but using Greek yogurt is a much better approach. I'll add it to all our Bolognese in the future.
There are also a lot of snacks on the Slimmer plan. You are also supposed to eat a mid-morning snack, mid-afternoon snack and bedtime snack. It is hard to eat that many snacks! I was suspicious of the bedtime snack as I thought you shouldn't eat after 7 pm but I really think it helped reduce any cravings and hungriness. I have not been hungry at all on this plan. And there is Greek yogurt, as a snack choice and in some recipes. I'd never had it before, but it is really thick yogurt and very filling.
With few exceptions, our two kids liked the food a lot, especially the fish and pizza. (They did not like the mac and cheese! They like the kind of mac and cheese that comes "in a box")
I have been on weight watchers (after my second child was born) and found it really effective, but after a while got tired of keeping up with the points. The Slimmer plan feels more like a plan of eating healthy for life, especially as there is no calorie counting and no strict portion control. Most of the recipes made more than I could eat. There are also "happy moments" (a small glass of wine or few pieces of chocolate or your own `happy choice' EVERY DAY) and as I mentioned above there are a number of free days (for example, in Cycle A, 4 out of 21 days are free days).
The beginning of the book contains a lengthy chapter about the science behind the book, and how the plan is specifically designed to increase metabolism and burn fat through the inclusion of specific foods into the plan and the recipes. These foods include, among others, low-fat dairy, lemon and vinegar (very interesting discussion of how inclusion of acidic foods at every meal burns fat), whole grains (yay - it is not low carb), lean protein, and high-fiber antioxidant fruit.Read more ›
As a Fitness Professional for over 20 years, I have seen hundreds of diets and programs and witnessed different results from clients with various levels of success. One thing is for certain- this WORKS and keeps working. It is all about good healthy food that is never boring or restrictive. The meals are gourmet- good enough to serve at fancy dinner parties and yet simple to make. The result is that you will never get tired of this menu plan. I have been cooking these meals for my fiance for almost two months without having an objective to specifically lose weight, and yet I have lost 8 pounds in areas that are the most difficult to lose weight. This program focuses on healthy living without a whole list of "Do not do's". My fiance has lost 18 pounds and he applauds every meal I prepare and says he is in heaven. I am learning new meals and preperations that are making me an even better cook as well! It truly is like taking a trip to the Mediterranean and experiencing all of the goodness and wonderful tastes of the region where healthy eating originated. I recommend everyone have this book in their kitchen. This is a real GEM that you will reach for over and over again. I am very honored to have a quote on the back cover of a book that I not only believe in, but that I use and live every day.
What could possibly be better than a diet that encourages you to eat delicious and nutritious Greek yoghurt and many other filling, tasty dishes plus lose weight at the same time? This book does just that by teaching dieters how to literally get slimmer the Mediterranean way--by eating a wide range of fabulous fresh foods while enjoying life to the fullest! This is one diet that's good for a lifetime.
The SLIMMER Diet is just what I needed- delicious food. Plus it gives me the motivation I need to stay on task and high-energy foods to stay engaged during the day. So many other get-slim books required me to starve which resulted in a lack of energy and big cravings during the day and of course, eventually quitting and getting fat again. Since, thankfully, I don't need to loose a ton of weight this summer, this book is really helping me with toning up and staying in shape. I love the fact that it has carbs because I love pasta lol I have already recommended it to my friends and suggest you buy it too if you want a great (EFFECTIVE) diet that's not too restrictive.
Slimmer - The New Mediterranean Way to Lose Weight, written by Harry Papas, was published in June 2012. Papas is a Greek dietician and founder of the Health and Diet Centre in Athens, Greece. His interest in diet and weight-loss is personal as he used the methods and foods described in Slimmer to lose the 110 pounds he gained during his freshman year in college.
Slimmer is not just another diet book. It combines a diet plan with recipes and, maybe most importantly, psychology. Papas recognizes that, for most people with weight issues, successful lifestyle changes require not only changing what you eat, but changing how you think. The author recognizes that most of us have an unhealthy relationship with food and also an unhealthy view of ourselves. Thus, he provides several short quotes to meditate on providing inspiration for the dieter to view food in a different way and increase self-esteem.
The diet portion of the book is based on the Mediterranean diet and the findings of the Seven Countries Study from the 1960's. It emphasizes the use of fresh fruits and vegetables, lean protein, whole grains, dairy products, olive oil, wine and vinegar. Unlike many diet plans, Slimmer also emphasizes the importance of the Mediterranean lifestyle including physical activity, exposure to sunlight, slower living and quality relationships. One unique aspect of Slimmer is the Happy Moments. Each day you get a Happy Moment to enjoy a small indulgence such as a piece of chocolate, a small alcoholic drink or a medium cookie. The key is to anticipate your Happy Moment and savor whatever special food you choose. The plan also allows for Free Days when the dieter can have a favorite food such as a hamburger or even fried chicken within certain parameters....
The diet plan itself is very specific. It will appeal to people who need or want a lot of structure in a diet plan. The plan provides three three-week cycles of meal plans. It includes all the recipes to make the meals as well. The recipes include meals such as Summer Vegetable Risotto with Chicken, Spicy Sautéed Veal Chop and Whole Wheat Baguette Pizza. The recipes have easy-to-follow instructions and, for the most part, utilize ingredients that should be easy to find in your local grocery store. The author does a great job of making use of leftovers from supper as a meal for the next day's lunch. The plan does allow for some substitutions, but it is probably not the diet plan for someone who needs a lot of flexibility in food choices. While the author provides some replacement ideas, this diet plan is probably not for individuals with dairy sensitivities as many of the recipes rely on Greek yogurt or other forms of dairy.
If you are willing to cook a variety of foods and are ready to change your relationship with food, this diet plan is a great place to start. Considering the detailed menu plans, the recipes, inspirational content and detailed index contained in the 244-page book, it is a bargain with a list price of $26.95.
I received a complimentary review copy of this book.Read more ›
