I was first offered the Sling Adapter from our local Dish Network when we upgraded to an HD DVR. What I liked was that you can be anywhere around the world and via Internet, access your Dish Network DVR and watch a program anywhere. And I figured, why would I need this? The last thing I needed, was to be busy at work and then having the TV play on our cell phone, iPad or device.

But the reason why I purchased it was for the main purpose of giving my wife and child access to the DVR when I'm busing watching something on the main TV (movie, playing video games, etc.) So, now they can watch Dish Network on her laptop, computer or iPad. So, no more kicking me off the TV or vice versa.

I. THE SLING ADAPTER

The Sling Adapter is quite thin. It just sits on top of our DVR but it's a device as pictured...just plug it in to the back of your Dish Network DVR, connect to the Internet (I use a Logitech HD Powerline 200a, so one of the Powerline Adapters is connected to the router and the other one is connected to a wall socket that plugs into the Sling Adapter) and that's it.

II. HOW IT WORKS

You then go on Dishnetwork.com and log in and go to my account and then to DISH Remote Access. And you can access what's on your DVR, watch any program or schedule your DVR from your computer Laptop, iPhone or iPad. There is an app for iPhone and iPad. Very easy to use and lag depends on if you are doing many things on your computer. Note: Only one person can access the sling adapter at one time.

JUDGMENT CALL:

Aside from giving my wife and son another way to catch their shows when their father is hogging up the TV, I found it important during an emergency situation.

UPDATE: I now have internet service called "BLAST" from a certain cable company that has a real-world 7Mbps upload. Video quality on my Sling Adapter, even in HD, is flawless, even looks good when I'm on 3G. And I've also discovered that this can be used to watch TV on my iPad from within my own network, this does not consume your Internet bandwidth. Assuming you're on the same network at home, the video stream goes directly to your computer or mobile device. Only the control commands are transmitted over the Internet through Dish's servers.

When I had DSL I was pretty disappointed with the performance of this, because I had only 0.5Mbps upload on my Internet. It's not really usable in any way at that speed. (NOTE: I'm still rating this positively because it's obviously not the device's fault.)

If you are considering this, I'd strongly recommend you do this first--

1. Go find a speed testing website. You'll find one easily by searching the net. I used one of the most popular ones.

2. Run the speed test. All you care about is the "upload" speed which is basically always a smaller number than your download speed.

3. If the upload speed is:
About 500 Kbps - Prepare for sadness, consider upgrading your broadband first
700Kbps - Bare minimum for SD video to run so you can at least watch it.
1Mbps-2Mbps - You're probably fine, and definitely fine in SD.
2Mbps and up - Sweet! You should have no problems streaming HD!

Note: 1Mbps = 1000Kbps. Convert as needed.

Sadly, many ISPs in this backwards country provide sub-1Mbps upload speeds. It's a shame.

We travel more and more these days in our RV, and have missed the local touch, as well as our regular programs, while we travel. We often go several weeks at a time.

All it took was this $36 device, an Ethernet cable from the router to our Receiver, and in 10 minutes we were streaming our DISH to the iPad/iPhone! If you have access to internet at a reasonable speed, you are GOLD to go with this little baby! I mean, I plugged in the router to the receiver (Ethernet cat5 cable) and then plugged in the Sling Adapter - THEN got the instructions out.

I had registered for DishOnline ahead of time, but by the time I located the quick start sheet, and had the instructions out, I was watching TV on the iPad! They have changed their process, so there is no need to register on the Sling site...everything is handled through DishOnline.

And you get all of the DISH Blockbuster programming in addition (yes, DISH bought Blockbuster). Netflix is free too and it has a deeper library...

It acts just like your second receiver (which means you watch what the 2nd receiver is watching). If someone else is using the second one, either you watch what they watch (or record) or you bump them. I recommend telling them before bumping them from their program or killing their recording!

It works well, and speedily, and since DISH online now has an iOS app (May 2012) that is FREE, you can watch FREE and not have to buy the $30 sling app for your iPad.

High Def or Standard (you can downsample if you are streaming over 3G or 4G to save bandwidth). I took it on a walk away from our house, and when well out of wifi range fired it up and was watching live TV from the sattelite in less than 10 seconds. I switched channels and services, and it works great.
