Book Description

Goliath wants to intimidate you, cripple you, and hold you captive. He wants to steal your confidence, the hope you're meant to have, and the joy we should all experience in life. Is he doing it to you now?
Are you stressed, anxious, sad, discouraged, angry, depressed?
Do you doubt yourself, your abilities, your personal strength and confidence?
Are memories from the past preventing you from looking forward to the future?
Do you carry burdens too large for a team of horses to haul?
Is baggage hanging on to you, instead of you letting go of it?
Quite simply, are you loving life, or feel beaten down from the time you get up?
A Sling and A Stone is a plan to help regain yourself. It includes strategies to identify what form Goliath has taken in your life, and provides tips on facing him; and coming away victorious.
We're all meant to have a life filled with joy, hope, and love.
If you're ready to take on the Goliaths in your life, let's get started!

There is no doubt that many people have their own Goliath. It is also clear that there cannot be a recipe that works for everyone. Every person is different, every situation is different. Life is varied and standardization is bound to fail. However, the first - and most fundamental - step this book encourages the reader to take is to stop and explore the fear that is limiting their quality of life and success. Facing your fear takes you out of your comfort zone - and so the standard way of dealing with fear is to try to ignore it by learning to live with it.
This book gets you to face your fear by promising to deliver practical guidelines on how you can conquer it. And you will find plenty of suggestions and recommendations in his book. Clearly, you have to select, adapt and try - and then revise again based on your experience. There is no one-size-fits-all recipe that can be applied without effort. But the rewards could be truly life changing.
So has the author succeeded or not? The book is well structured and provides plenty of practical, actionable advice. However, what I like most is that concepts, guidance and suggested actions are presented in the context of real life examples, notably many from the author's own life. This makes the book much more personal and brings it alive. It gets my vote. Peter

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank you so much... What a book! October 14, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As someone who has come from... let's just say a 'challenging childhood', I have read my fair share of self-help, motivational, emotional growth type books. This book is definitely one I will re-read over and over. Not only does it really cut to the core of some many issues that we all deal with, but it give really well-writen advise on how to overcome them. Clear step-by-step actions, that help you win over your internal battle just one small step at a time.

Thank you Joseph for an amazing book.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE GIANT WITHIN October 8, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
What can I add to all the glorious reviews except that I can vouch for Joseph's insights because anyone who has traveled his path, encountered the obstacles in the way of life and has managed to overcome some/most/temporarily/repeatedly, comes to the same conclusions, the same eternal truths.

Goliath is the Archetype of Fear that dwells within each one of us and erects obstacles for us to overcome so we can grow into the giant within, which is the bigger and stronger version of ourselves. David is the everyday Me, on a journey of self-discovery and inner power.

The insights and exercises in this book are bound to take you a long way in your journey towards your purpose.

Don't be surprised if you meet God along the way. Not your current perception of God, but a totally different version you never knew existed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Confront the Goliath(s) In Your Life October 12, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Wonderful, well written, and needs to be read by probably every adult out there. This is a fantastic guide on how to face your inner-demons (Goliaths) and take charge of your life. We all have that fear/regret/angst that is holding us back and more often than not we've simply created our own prison that we are trapped in. Read this book and start taking the steps you need to so you can be free!

5.0 out of 5 stars At some time or other we all need this book! October 5, 2012
By Salim
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
No matter how cool and confident we appear on the outside we are still children on the inside with our own demons or Goliaths to deal with.

I found this book to be a fascinating tool to explore these inner demons or Goliaths and face them down ... in spite of the near terror this can cause many of us. You will learn some very valuable techniques and guidelines to accomplish this difficult objective.

Now don't get me wrong, i am not saying this will be an easy process even with this book or that there will not be a lot of trial and error. However thanks to the author's fine efforts you will not be alone in fighting Goliath. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars POWERFUL October 15, 2012
By Mark L

A Sling and a Stone is a very POWERFUL book on the topic of facing the Goliaths that I face in my life. I felt that the author did a phenomenal job on connecting with his audience and I really admire his honesty and transparency in sharing his story so that we could take the lessons from each of them. I was brought to tears on a few different occasions while reading this book and I can assure you that I will be facing a few of my "Goliaths" with a new found strength after reading this book. A big heart felt THANK YOU goes out to Joseph Haulbrook for the courage he showed in writing this book.

More About the Author

First and foremost, Joe is not afraid to push a broom. He believes a willing spirit and a humble attitude are the foundation for any accomplishment.

He is the son of hard working parents. His mother, a retired special education teacher, and his late father retired after 30+ years with NASA.

Joe has been working since he was big enough to push a lawn mower. His jobs prior to college included busboy, stocker, sales, pizza cook, landscaper, carpenter, music instructor, newspaper photographer, and swim instructor. During college he worked primarily for his university, but also worked weekends and summers for manual labor temp agencies. It was all these experiences combined that grew his personal beliefs in business and life:
* Lead by example
* Follow with integrity
* Don't worry about who gets the credit
* Leave a place better than you found it
* Do something for someone who cannot repay you
* Complain only when you are willing to help make needed changes
* Be willing to be willing

With a Bachelor's degree in Education and a Master's degree in Business, he has experienced a wide array of organizational structures.

As an Educator he works mostly with At-Risk Students. The real challenge, he says, is bringing everyone together to agree on one strategic plan, then persistently follow through with it until the student is successful.

As a Consultant he has worked with large and small businesses, leaders, supervisors, managers, and business owners. He has also worked with churches, schools, even professional counselors, and football coaches. He is a multi-year recipient of both Who's Who in America - Business, and Education.

As a Leader, Joe brings a sense of calm to stressful situations, and an air of reason and common sense that helps leaders, managers, and organizations come together to create solutions. He never pretends to have all the right answers, but he usually has the right questions. And if it takes pushing a broom to find solutions, he will lead the way.
