5.0 out of 5 stars Sexual Content: Rated R, December 4, 2000
This review is from: A Slip in Time (Paperback)
This review is coming about 2 years too late, but I enjoyed the book so much that I had to comment on it anyway! If you love time travels, and if you love romances set in medieval Scotland, then this book is a must have, a definite keeper.

19th century Scotland: The castle Dunraven has been closed to visitors for over 20 years and Julia Hargrove is about to find out why. One of the last of her group to arrive for a summer party, she finds herself ensconced inside of the tower chamber due to a lack of bedrooms. The tower chamber turns out to be as creepy as it looks, for strange things begin to happen almost as soon as she arrives...

15th century Scotland: Rae MacKinnon was recently released from London Tower where he had been imprisoned for almost 2 decades. He came home only to find his father dying and himself the third laird of Dunraven. Strange things begin happening thereafter, when a beautiful woman claiming to be from the future begins making appearances in his bedchamber...

This author is an absolute master at invoking emotions. If she wants you to feel freaked out, she knows how to use a lightening storm and a few choice words to do it. If she wants to bring a tear to your eye, she knows how to set a scene up and deliver an unforgettable line. If she wants you to feel sexual tension...well, she does that very well too [grin].

Another thing Kirkwood knows how to manipulate to its best advantage is the setting. Looking back, I know the book was loaded with history, yet she wove it so effortlessly into the story line that I never once felt hit over the head by it. Some historical romances read like history texts because the author doesn't know how to deliver it. Not Kirkwood. You won't find yourself skimming paragraphs while she gives you a page long recitation of how a room looked at the time.

And then, of course, there is the romance aspect of the novel. I don't think I can put into words how well done it is. I could feel Julia and Rae's desperation to stay together, feel their fears that the slips would stop and they'd no longer be granted time together. This book grabbed my attention from chapter 1 and never let it go. Definitely buy this one!

4.0 out of 5 stars I'm hoping there will be a sequel, November 23, 1998
By
This review is from: A Slip in Time (Paperback)
Ms. Kirkwood did a wonderful job in telling this tale. I was drawn into the story from the first page, and kept enthralled until I closed the back cover. As is commented upon in the other reviews, she does a thorough job of explaining the ideas of "Time Slips" and makes you believe it might be possible. I especially like the time periods in which Ms. Kirkwood used. Instead of your "typical" time travel from the present, she used two dates in the past, and played the Victorian Lady and Highland laird well off against each other. There are not too many times that I actually laugh while reading, but I woke my husband up with my chuckling. I sincerely hope that there will be a sequel to this. . .maybe with Rae's nephew?

4.0 out of 5 stars a fun-filled time travel tale, November 29, 2001
This review is from: A Slip in Time (Paperback)

1893
Julia Hargrove accompanies her aunt, cousins, and some friends on an exciting excursion to Dunraven Castle in the Highlands of Scotland. The bedchamber Julia is using has not been used in twenty years. The reason for this is not entirely known but rumors abound of paranormal happenings in that room! Just what kind exactly Julia is about to find out...

1437
Rae MacKinnon, the third laird of Dunraven castle, returns from a long imprisonment in England to rule his keep and his clan. The very last thing he expects is to repeatedly meet a woman in his bedchamber from over 400 years in the future!

Julia and Rae are frequently thrown together through the amazing and rare phenomenon of an opening in the veil of time. This allows them a few stolen moments of happiness as their love grows. Will they conquer time and political intrigue to find peace and happiness together? The reader will be eager to find out.

Ms. Kirkwood has woven a delightful tale of love and passion through time. She uses a very believable theory to explain the ability of her characters to travel through time. The reader can't help but fall in love with Rae and Julia. Both are very complex characters who have always had strength. They find even stronger passion and ability from their love for each other. Both are intense and multidimensional characters who step right off the pages of the book and into the reader's heart. The entire cast is enchanting, with its intriguing secondary characters and exciting villains.

Ms. Kirkood's reasoning through which she spins a magical tale fascinated this reviewer, being of a scientific mind, balanced by a dose of romance. The reader can almost believe her premise of how and why a "Slip in Time" could very well happen.

This is a well developed tale which keeps the reader enthralled from page one. Ms. Kirkwood throws in several twists to the story which should keep the reader guessing what is to come. However, the twists aren't quite shocking enough, for this reviewer, to keep certain parts of the story from being unsurprising. In spite of the predictability of some aspects of the plot, this is an intelligently written, entirely delightful story. This reviewer is eager to read more of Ms. Kirkwood's work.
