Book Description

November 1, 2000
This shocking saga details the year and a half investigative journalist M. Rutledge McCall spent living in the largest, most violent ghetto in America: California's South Central Los Angeles.

During his time in the 'hood, gang members were sending bullet-riddled corpses to the county morgue at the rate of one every 11 hours. After spending months in gang turf on a regular basis, sufficient mutual trust and respect grew between gang members and McCall that they allowed him to be involved in every aspect of their lives: to go where they went, to see what they saw, to do what they did. ...The first white outsider ever allowed complete access to modern, big-city, black and Latino gangs.

The coincidental timing of McCall's research encompassed some of the most violent episodes ever to grip L.A.: the Rodney King beating and the trial of the police officers involved, the Latasha Harlins murder by a Korean grocer, and the deadliest riot in modern American history.

The events that this writer witnessed and participated in, not only shattered his perceptions of racism in America today, they shattered his entire life. The sequence of some of the events in this stunning account has been shuffled, in order to protect the guilty...the author included.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"It isn't often we get this excited about a title. This book addresses so many current socio-political issues--juvenile street crime, police abuse, fatherhood, racism, and on and on--in such a unique you-are-there style that we recognized it immediately as a work of immense contemporary significance. We publishers know not to openly confess such feelings, but one word popped into my head when I finished my non-stop reading of the draft...'Pulitzer.'" -Charles Washington, Jr.

From the Inside Flap

"I could fill a hundred books with what I saw and experienced in my year and a half in the South Central ghetto," states investigative journalist M. Rutledge McCall, "including unspeakable atrocities, which shall remain unspoken. Had I known what lay ahead of me when I began this research...I would never have undertaken it. I'm thankful I survived. Most do not."

The author of this book makes you feel like you are right there experiencing everything as it happens. At the same time, he adds footnotes that give you additional information about what was going on. He gives a lot of background information about what was occurring sociologically at the time. This creates a deeper understanding and makes it a must read for anyone seeking to understand this culture.

5.0 out of 5 stars PURE GENIUS, July 4, 2000
This review is from: Slipping Into Darkness : My Survival in America's Most Violent Ghetto...a true story (CD-ROM)
This book will no doubt greatly upset racists, the irreligeous and other similarly IQ-challenged, but the subject matter is important and this writer is a brave new visionary. His writing style is pure genius, part poetry, part prose, and all powerful. If you want to experience an exciting study of what causes racism and hatred based solely on skin color, then read this book.
