The author of this book makes you feel like you are right there experiencing everything as it happens. At the same time, he adds footnotes that give you additional information about what was going on. He gives a lot of background information about what was occurring sociologically at the time. This creates a deeper understanding and makes it a must read for anyone seeking to understand this culture.

5.0 out of 5 stars PURE GENIUS, July 4, 2000
This review is from: Slipping Into Darkness : My Survival in America's Most Violent Ghetto...a true story (CD-ROM)
This book will no doubt greatly upset racists, the irreligeous and other similarly IQ-challenged, but the subject matter is important and this writer is a brave new visionary. His writing style is pure genius, part poetry, part prose, and all powerful. If you want to experience an exciting study of what causes racism and hatred based solely on skin color, then read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth Its PULITZER nomination!, April 5, 2001

SLIPPING INTO DARKNESS by M. Rutledge McCall is a book that brings gang life to the reader. It is so intense that there were times I had to walk away from it. His detailed look at life within and around a gang is the most realistic I've read. This is different from anything I have ever read or heard about South Central L.A. I recommend this to anyone who likes a 'real' read...

5.0 out of 5 stars Utterly Incredible, December 19, 2000

I was far more dazzled by this book than the guy from Montebello. Matter of fact, I agree with the other "breathless" reviews, and I've never even heard of this writer before. But he's good. This story is much more than a gang story. It's all about character and true manhood in today's America. It's also got a great chapter about the L.A. riot of 1992. The writer was obviously there. I know, cause so was I. The book is well worth the read and would make a fantastic movie. Unfortunately, though, it won't be made without the involvement of a Laurence Singleton or Spike Lee type movie maker. American movie goers isn't ready for this kind of truth.

5.0 out of 5 stars SLIPPING INTO DARKNESS: My Survival..., May 20, 2000
This review is from: Slipping Into Darkness : My Survival in America's Most Violent Ghetto...a true story (CD-ROM)
Wow. Get it. Read it. This is the most powerful socio-literary look at modern racism, poverty and youth & police violence since 'Black Like Me'. Exciting read, too!

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!, February 12, 2002

Man I got to disagree with that Maggie persons review totally. This book not only puts down violence and destruction it offers a great solution for solving such problems in our big inner cities in America. Also it has nothing to do with the type of violence of 9-11. So whoever that Maggie was obviously didn't read the book at all. Its a great book with an important message for the world, LOVE one another! A really astounding story and deserved the nomination it got.

I couldn't stop turning the pages. This guy is, bar none, one of the best writers in America today, and "Slipping Into Darkness" is simply incredible. Definitely Pulitzer material.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tha BOMB!, June 7, 2000

This book just RULES! The range of emotions this writer takes you through leaves you completely drained. Wow. Now here's a white boy who's not afraid to tell it like it is even if it pisses off his white buddies. The experience nearly ruins his life, but he's still close friends with the gang leaders who befriended him while he lived in the L.A. slums! If this book were ever made into a movie it'll make 'Boyz in the Hood' and 'New Jack City' look like 'Romper Room' and 'Mr. Rogers Neighborhood'.

Slipping Into Darkness is one part gripping narrative, one-part sociological treatise -- both parts EXCEPTIONAL. It should be required college reading and would make for an amazing film. This Pulitzer Prize worthy novel not only contains some of the flat-out best writing you will ever see, it also contains within its pages the power to change how you look at the American Urban Crisis going on right now. Never has any other piece of non-fiction work allowed the reader to view the looking glass from the inside out with such eloquence, riveting truth, and dense power. An education and an enlightenment. Take the time to read it, it's well worth it.
