Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

"Most Americans are sloth-impaired," observes Dale Burg in her humorous and charmingly illustrated Sloth: Ode to Disarray & Delay, the fourth installment in the Sin Series from Red Rock Press. Burg, who has taught comedy writing at NYU and is the author of 16 books, declares the Official Sloth Breakfast to be eggs over easy (cooked by someone else), advises against any strenuous activity except for slow dancing and waxes philosophical about the benefits of doing tomorrow what one could do today. With a historical overview of sloth, proverbs and famous quotations, Burg convincingly shows why the best is always worth the wait. 70 color illus.

5.0 out of 5 stars How Wonderful to Read Something Really NEW, May 3, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Sloth: Ode to Disarray & Delay (Sin) (Hardcover)
I heard this author on radio and she was so funny that I bought the book. The book is just as amusing as Dale Burg is, but even better since it has all these great, colorful illustrations of people making mistakes and even a kind of hall of fame art gallery of paintings of people sleeping. But underneath all the humor there is something serious here. We see that most people really do work too hard, and too many hours, and we're really out of synch with the universe. Not only is all that going faster, faster, faster bad for us, it's not the way the significant achievenments in art, science or even sports come about. We need to daydream. We need to make mistakes---sometimes our errors lead us to what we are really looking for. I'm going to get a copy for a friend who is in lawschool, and maybe another one for my father.

5.0 out of 5 stars An enduring tribute to the fine art of putting off, May 16, 2001
This review is from: Sloth: Ode to Disarray & Delay (Sin) (Hardcover)
Dale Burg's Sloth: Ode To Disarray & Delay is an enduring tribute to the fine art of putting off for tomorrow anything demanded of you today. Burg makes a compelling argument that we tend to work too hard, plan too hard, and that it was never Nature's way for human beings to plan too far ahead or exert so much effort. Indeed, too much exercise or too little sleep can be harmful to one's health! Sloth draws upon the wit and wisdom of an intelligent and congenial writer whose wry advice is only half in jest. Among her points is that the universe is naturally messy, we live longer if we kick back more, we can look great by striving less, and that from diamonds to cheese, there's a lot we value in life that simply takes a great deal of time. Beautifully illustrated throughout, Sloth is a "must" for anyone who feels harried or otherwise put upon by the demands of modern life -- and those who love them.
