This is enjoyable all the way through. A very good listen. Madeline Adams performs simply and beautifully throughout. No attempts to be anything that she is not. It's refreshing to just get it straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak, she just gives it to you straight. Lots of good songs here. The first two are memorable: "Sleeping Dogs," and "To Hell and Back." At times the lyrics have a searching quality, like she doesn't know exactly how to say something, but I Love that she says it anyway. There is no sense of tentativeness (though I privately wonder if she wouldn't change a word or two years after the fact). She's been compared to Kimya Dawson, and there is something esthetically related, however Dawson's lyrics are much more realized and complete while Madeline is more of a singer. She has a very nice voice perfectly accompanied by her simple but often creative guitar playing. Every individual is an original but out of politeness and/or fear we show the world just a part of it, but that habit makes it more difficult to let the whole self shine through. Who would have thought it could be so challenging to be oneself? Madeline is the original.
