This book fell somewhat short,

I usually can't wait to finish a Pamela Britton book, but this on fell short for me. I felt that Pamela inserted her reader into the chracters stories too quickly. The story felt like it had yet to be edited, as in it was 'skeleton', and the flesh of the story wasn't filled in yet. The lead-ins from scene to scene in the book were confusing at best. And the intentions and reasoning of the characters was unclear most times.
I do have to give the author props for coming up with a basic story that was good and had potential. I was just disappointed with the finished product. Don't let this discourage you from reading her other books though. They are all MUCH better than this one.

Dana Johnson enters a contest in which you win a date with sexy NASCAR driver Braden James, and wins! Braden is inmediately attracted to her, and although she's trying to get out of going on a date with him, he will do anything to get some time alone with her.
Pamela Britton doesn't write a romance novel that makes you think you've eaten too much sweet stuff, she writes witty characters, funny situation that makes the novel believable. The first scene, in which Braden is looking at her, and he's kidding around with Dana just killed me!! I devour every book Pamela Britton writes, I also love spin offs, so be sure to read the rest! :)

I am not a NASCAR fan but I really enjoy this genre of books. They tend to be PG-13 and with romance and NASCAR mixed together. This story is about abused women who wins a date with NASCAR driver Braden James. He falls for her at first sight and takes on all her problems - a Knight in Shining Armor. It was Ok and this author is excellent writer so that helps with the plot and female character Dana that just didn't like. If you are looking for sweet story with a NASCAR theme I would read it - but if you are looking for more conflict and meaty characters I would skip.
If you like this genre I would suggest; On The Move (Harlequin Nascar) and To The Limit (Nascar Library Collection). She has a new NASCAR Book due out September 2010. She also writes Historical Romance in the past and now has new series due out Lord Shameless (Lords of Silverton - Book I) -- January 2010 ,Lord Notorious (Lord of Silverton - Book II) -- March 2010 & Lord of Desire (Lords of Silverton-Book III) -- May 2010 -- off to check out more by this author...

I couldn't like the heroine. Her thinking and actions were idiotic. However, the story about the abusive ex-fiance was good.,

STORY BRIEF:
Dana is a CPA whose fiancé Stewart beat her twice, leaving bruises. She broke off the engagement and went to a NASCAR race for the weekend with a girlfriend. A drawing was held and Dana won - to have a date with Braden, a famous NASCAR driver. The date is scheduled for two months later, but Braden likes the beautiful Dana and doesn't want to wait. He asks her to go out that evening for dinner. She refuses. They have other interactions before the official date. Most of the story is about their wanting each other but her not letting it happen. A secondary story involves the actions of her ex-fiance Stewart. REVIEWER'S OPINION (WITH SOME SPOILERS): I had major problems with Dana, the heroine - wimpy, irrational, inconsiderate. Braden was good, kind and wanted to spend time with her. She wouldn't go on a date with him for reasons I still don't understand. She told herself it was because she didn't want him asking about her bruises, which he already knew about. She later tells him that they will never have a relationship "not now. Not ever." She leaves the weekend events early to get away from him. A week or so later she sees him for publicity pictures. He acts distant because of the way she left him. She can't understand why because she was looking forward to seeing him. Later when he is in the middle of a race. She tells him she is leaving him. This hurt his performance during the last half of the race. After that, they both wanted to be with each other, but she said no, they must spend time apart. I can't imagine any "rational" reason why she said this. They needed to get to know each other - at least a little bit. All these conflicts throughout the story were based on her insecurities and the changing of her mind and her idiotic decisions. I can't have any sympathy or be interested in reading about someone like her. It's possible to have a good story about someone foolish and stupid. But that is not the case here. I want stories with interesting characters, events and plot. This didn't have any of that. There was potential. The best parts of the story were the events happening with Stewart, the abuser. DATA: Story length: 369 pages. Swearing language: moderate. Number of sex scenes: one (referred to in a manner appropriate for young adults - no details shown). Setting: current day Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Virginia. Copyright: 2009. Genre: contemporary NASCAR romance.

tender warm contemporary NASCAR romance,
This review is from: Slow Burn (NASCAR Library Collection) (Mass Market Paperback)
Dana Johnson was about to marry Stewart until she learned he was taking credit for her work. She quickly ended that relationship. Her friend and co-worker at Steele and Steele Alysa takes her to a NASCAR race; an event she has never attended before.
However, Dana is appalled to learn that Alysa entered her name in a win a date with driver Braden James contest; and she won. Dana says no, but Braden persuades her to go through the dating ritual as his sponsor, My-Lovematch.com, demands they do. She reluctantly agrees though she doubts a rebounder like her will be any fun. To her shock she begins to fall in love with the hunk; not the macho image, but the sensitive former foster child. Shockingly Alysa, who sets them up, is jealous with rage. SLOW BURN is a tender warm contemporary NASCAR romance in which her stepfather puts perspective when he wishes her the best in life and love, but with a quarterback. Fans will enjoy this engaging tale although the villain has sniffed too many racing car fumes. Still Pamela Britton provides a wonderful ride to the winner's circle with the help of the pit crew (and not just those at the track). Harriet Klausner |
