5.0 out of 5 stars The Scintillating Pleasure Principle of Vanessa Daou
Whereas ZIPLESS, her debut masterpiece, churned about in the steamy juncture of sex and intellect, SLOW TO BURN - an astonishing follow-up - gravitates more towards the heart. But dont be misled into thinking that neither sex nor intellect have been abandoned. In fact, the sense of 'confessional' seems to heighten the presence of both. Vanessa has penned the lyrics this...

3.0 out of 5 stars Two strong tracks and lots of filler
"Two to tango" is one of the strong tracks and delivers on the promise of Daou's sexy voice but on most of the others there's not much happening. Her breathy approach is so overplayed on most of the CD that I got a little annoyed. "Waiting for the sun to rise" helped prop things back up but I was generally disappointed. This is not the sophisticated...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Scintillating Pleasure Principle of Vanessa Daou, September 21, 2001
This review is from: Slow to Burn (Audio CD)
Whereas ZIPLESS, her debut masterpiece, churned about in the steamy juncture of sex and intellect, SLOW TO BURN - an astonishing follow-up - gravitates more towards the heart. But dont be misled into thinking that neither sex nor intellect have been abandoned. In fact, the sense of 'confessional' seems to heighten the presence of both. Vanessa has penned the lyrics this round (ZIPLESS' lyrics were sizzling adaptations of Erica Jong's poetry), with poignant phrases like "Red ball in a yellow sky/ I'll follow you til the day I die" hanging in memory from the first spin of this amazing, affecting disc.

Once again, hubby Peter Daou, possibly one of more underrated arranger and producer talents on today's scene, crafts Vanessa's songs into neo-trip hop mini-movies, augumented with just enough funk and jazz to keep the proceeding danceable, but never mindless or without the capacity to evoke reflection, and sometimes, even tears.

...it's worth it, and sears the digits off any Sade album (talented as she is, I find many of her tunes morose redundant for more than listening to 3 cuts in a row). Vanessa will take you through the entire gamut of humam emotion, but she never lets you wallow in pathos or sentimentality. SLOW TO BURN is like that great fantasy you have of Mr or Mrs Right coming to life close to you in the most exciting scene imagined, and the intimacy and love are overwhelming.

Vanessa's breathy voice does it once again in this mello-smoothe album. The album gets better as you listen to it. Her voice, lyrics and sound all fuse together to make the perfect combination. If you are looking for an album to put you in the mood, or just to chill out after a long day, this is the one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Deep sensuality - Venessa style, October 6, 2004

Venessa and Peter Daou make no mystery of it, they are sensual. Their 1996 'Slow to Burn' is a testement to their wicked style of sex and sensuality into one CD. Deep lyrics of combustiable romance and the never-ending desire of fulillment blends into smooth beats and catchy songs in this CD. Venessa Daou's voice is so sensual, it may make you beg for more. I love her whispery singing and relaxed style of exposing herself in her songs.

A very good buy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very addictive, April 28, 1999

I first heard Vanessa Daou's "Two to Tango" on a local soft jazz station. I really liked it so I went out and bought the CD. It's been so long since Sade has come out with something new so I was looking for someone to take her place in my life. It took a while for me to get into some of it b/c it seemed a little pretentious but I warmed up too her style and I've become a big fan of hers. She is very smooth. I consider the second half of the album the best, with her rendition of Billie Holiday's "Don't Explain" haunting and passionate. A really good album, I listen to it all the time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great work of art from a wonderful talent, July 30, 2005

I first became aware of Vanessa Daou when her song "Two to Tango" was featured in the movie Fools Rush In with Salma Hayek and Matthew Perry. I looked high and low for about 3 years before I found this song. I bought this cd for the song but I was pleasantly suprised when I decided to let the entire cd play. This is a must have for any cd collection. You will not be sorry.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great album. Not quite a "Zipless", but get it anyway., May 20, 1999

A friend couldn't get into this CD and gave it to me, one of the best things I've ever been given. Vanessa always takes me to another world full of desire, wanting, and passion for a man and a woman; one positive yet dark, safe yet unfamiliar, Beautiful music, well arranged, and Vanessa's breathy voice is unexplainable. I immediately sought Zipless and after a long quest found it, which was good and bad. Good because it is even better (have to make effort to return from fantasy world now), bad because Zipless drew my attention away from Slow To Burn somewhat. Nevertheless, I am a Vanessa Daou fan for live. Now if only I could see the Black Forest video, the sexy clip on her website isn't enough!

5.0 out of 5 stars Keeps on Sizzling more than a decade after its release, November 22, 2008
This review is from: Slow to Burn (Audio CD)
Slow to Burn is one of those rare CD's that I can listen to all the way through without skipping a song. I first bought this item on cassette tape back in the late 90's, but have since replaced it on CD.

Like many of you, I first discovered Vanessa Daou's music while watching the movie Fools Rush In. The song "Two to Tango" really sparkled and intrigued me. The voice sounded like Sade, but when the credits rolled, I saw it was an artist completely unknown to me, Vanessa Daou.

"Two to Tango" is indeed a smooth escapade of a song, but there are many others on this album that rival it. From the slightly forlorn musings of "How Do You Feel?" and "Evening" to the tantalizing vibe of "Taste the Wine," this album is brimming with sleek, atmospheric rhythms. This album has a distinctive after-dark mood and is best enjoyed as the blazing sun dips into the horizon, letting the moon glow through the night.

If you like your music soft, subtle, and sensual, then Slow to Burn is certain to add some heat to your music collection.

Vanessa Daou has put together a collection of sensual love-inducing melodies and rythms that at once relax and stimulate the libido. Soft, seductive vocals sear into the heart, with the final result...an evening of love in the offering. Treat yorself and someone you love to this one over a glass or two of your favorite vintage, turn the lights down low, and enjoy...

I first heard Vanessa's music on a local contemporary jazz station. The song was "Slow To Burn." I only heard it once, but it made such an impression on me. Vanessa's music is fantastic and her voice is incredible! Vanessa's music is like a rose in a bunch of musical thorns! Please bring back REAL music!
