Sweet Southside Johnny,
By Blues Lover (New York) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Slow Dance (Audio CD)
If you're even a remote fan of Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes, this solo effort is a rediscovered wonder full of melody and feeling. The CD gets effort as it closes to the end. Tracks 6-10 are Southside as his bluesy best. Slow Dance, Your Precious Love, No Secret, When the Moment Is Right and Walking Through Midnight are all 5 star efforts. Slow Dance opens with the title track ... grab this baby before it goes out of print.

Southside: Solo, Soulful, and Superb,
By DPH (Boston, MA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Slow Dance (Audio CD)
Serious music fans are often looking for the undiscovered gem - an album that didn't get much attention when it came out, but that is a wonderful listening experience. "Slow Dance" is just such an album. For this 1988 effort, Southside Johnny Lyon decided to go the solo route, sans the Asbury Jukes, for the one and only time in his career. Those looking for the classic hard rocking horn-based R & B that is the Asbury Jukes signature sound won't found it here. However, what you will find is a wonderful collection of soulful, bluesy songs, which Southside sings right from the heart as only he can. There is not a bad track on the whole album. "Little Calcutta", "Act of Love", and "Slow Dance" are particular standouts. There is also an incredible version of "Your Precious Love" (the old Jerry Butler tune) that will bring tears to your eyes. This is the kind of album Michael Bolton thinks he makes and wishes he could make, but couldn't in a million years. (Either you've got soul or you don't - Southside clearly does.) Many of the songs were written by Southside, and it's clear that his songwriting talents really evolved and matured from previous efforts. The production is also outstanding - Steve Skinner does a masterful job. For Springsteen fans, the last track "Walking Through Midnight", was written by Bruce, with Southside adding the lyrics. Like much of Southside's efforts, this one deserved a better fate in terms of sales, but as an artistic statement it an absolute success. If you can find this, get yourself a copy. You won't regret it.
