Slow Dancing In A Burning Room (Live at the Nokia Theatre)

This is my second favorite John Mayer love song (Come Back to Bed is number one), and some of my friends find it odd that I think of this as a love song. Love has many facets...or to quote an old cliche....the good, the bad, and the ugly. No one writes a song about "love gone wrong" that wraps itself around your heart and makes you want to hear it over and over and over the way John does.

In my opinion his secret formula for being able to do this type of love song, is the tension he creates between the melodic music (yin) and the lyrical story (yang)...a balance that makes perfection. The moment I first heard this song, the seductive, sexy, sultry, melody, created imagery of two lovers slow dancing very erotically on a crowded dance floor as if they were the only two in the room. The music also makes you think about undressing and making passionate love :)

On the other hand, you listen to the lyrical storyline that is so well plotted. It is the exact opposite...as that slow dancing is not a good thing....but romance in "the last throws of death". Love that has gone so terribly wrong...the lovers are bitter and only hurting each other...the relationship is "going up in flames". The story is a sad one, and you feel sympathy for the pain involved and you should feel like you do not want to eavesdrop and intrude...but, the music lures you in, so you suffer the telling of their sad story again, and again, and again, because the music makes you feel so sexy, and you want to feel that.

This creative process is so good there are no words!

All I can say is..... He is a musical genius... and for me..."nobody does it better...makes me feel sad for the rest....nobody does it half as good as he does...baby...he's the best!!"

I do have one small "bone to pick" about this version of the song...which is my favorite version...... On the DVD this song has an "intro" (a part of why this is my favorite version)...that they did not transfer to the CD version :(

One final note....Stay away from any "tribute to John Mayer" version of this song....none of them are worthy of the original.

My only issue was the number of versions of the song that are available. Makes it confusing for the buyer...
