5.0 out of 5 stars It Just Gets Better & Better
I initally picked up Slow Jams: The Timeless Collection, Vol. 3 for the classic I Wanna Be Closer by Switch. I Wanna Be Closer is a sizzling ballad courtesy of Jermaine Jackson's writing and producing talents, that's silky smooth and overflowing with romanticism. Bobby Debarge's searing falsetto countered by Philip Ingram's tenor/baritone made this a quiet storm staple...

I really only purchased this CD for the "Cut the Crap" by Paul Laurence track. I could not find this song anywhere and was delighted when I searched and found this romantic CD with my song.

Bobby Debarge's searing falsetto countered by Philip Ingram's tenor/baritone made this a quiet storm staple. Cleveland, OH-based Smooth Approach did a grand remake on their You Got It set that rivaled the original's smoothness and pull appeal. Other wll known tracks such as Shirley Murdock's "As We Lay," skillfully mixed synth-based minimalism with her evocative vocal, the classic Doo Wop flavored Penny For Your Thoughts by The Tavers and Baby Come Close by Smokey Robinson. There's also a little known ditty called I Wanna Make Love by Lilo Thomas.

I OWN THE ENTIRE COLLECTION OF 'SLOW JAMS' THE TIMELESS COLLECTION. I ALSO OWN THE ENTIRE COLLECTION OF 'SMOOTH GROOVES'. I CAN'T BELIEVE NO ONE HAD EVER HEARD OF 'THE LONELY ONE' & 'I DESTROYED YOUR LOVE'. THOSE TWO SONGS RECEIVED PLENTY OF AIR-PLAY IN CHICAGO! 'SLOW JAMS' VOL.3 IS WELL KNOWN FOR MORE THAN JUST A FEW SONGS. THAT WHOLE CD IS SLAMMIN'! AS A MATTER OF FACT, THE WHOLE COLLECTION IS RIGHT ON TIME!

2.0 out of 5 stars 2 awesome songs and a lot of filler, February 24, 2005
This review is from: Slow Jams: Timeless Collection 3 (Audio CD)
I have bought several "Slow Jams" CD's over the years, and they all have one thing in common: inconsistency. According to the liner notes, the songs were handpicked by LA dj Kevin James. Glad to know who is specifically to blame.

I bought this CD for one reason, "A Penny for Your Thoughts" by Tavares which I have not been able to find on a Tavares compilation, likely because it was recorded with RCA and all of their other hits were with Capitol. Being able to finally get that song on CD was the only reason this CD got 2 stars from me. And by the way, the CD incorrectly lists the song as "Penny for Your Thoughts", leaving off the "A". I hate when record companies can't take the extra effort to do things right.

The other good song on this album is "As We Lay" by Shirley Murdock, but I already had that song from a "Smooth Grooves" compilation. The rest of the material on this album is pretty thin except for a minor Smokey Robinson hit which I also already had on a Smokey compilation.

I am not saying the CD should be filled with Top 10 hits, I like CD's that offer rare gems that you can't find elsewhere. But as far as I can tell, only 4 songs on this CD made the Billboard Hot 100. I am not even sure if some of these songs even charted on the R&B 100 because the liner notes are so poor. It would be helpful to list out to the side of each song how it charted on each chart and list it as "uncharted" or "album cut" if it did not chart.

And one last dig before I go, this is supposed to be a CD to spend a romantic evening with someone. How the hell do you get romantic to a song called "Cut the Crap"? The end of the song has the male and female singers arguing with each other and the woman complaining about "skid marks" in the man's underwear. Not exactly the kind of song I would want to put on to set the mood.

Buy this for Tavares and Shirley Murdock, but be warned about the rest of the material.
