A debut I've waited 3 years for,

This review is from: Slow Motion Reign (Audio CD)
With a band on Serj Tankian's label, one would figure that they are in for another dosage of metal like System of a Down or Bad Acid Trip. Yet when you listen to Slow Motion Reign, the only thing that comes out of the speakers are infectious harmonies and song structures with intriguing musicianship. Think 70's psychadelic lyrics and music with 90's catchy rock. In 2003, I bought a Streetwise sampler which showcased Serjical Strike's artists which showed Slow Motion Reign performing Silent Movie. When the lyric " Do you want a cigarette she said...i inhaled her every word" hit my ears, I've been hooked ever since. The album's opener is "Twilight Skylight" has been reworked since the band's first demos. It is a faster paced song that isn't really a great introduction into the album, but this leaves way for "Isn't It Time". If I were a radio DJ for a day, I would immediately put this song on because it is mind boggling how this isn't right next to Muse and The Fray. The driving piano pace makes for a harmonic catchy song that cannot be denied in it's approach. "Via Satellite" wouldn't be out of place on RHCP's Stadium Arcadium with a grooving guitar pace to it. "Embryonic" and "No Way, No How" are both previously released songs on last year's EP. The message in "No Way.." is really moving and deserves a read in the lyric sheet. It should be noted with these two songs that a Middle Eastern influence is sprinkled throughout the album given the band's origin. "Life Simulator" is the masterpiece on the album in my mind. In what starts in a very soothing groove morphs into an emotional and gripping end. The lyrical content is also worth mentioning focusing on the state of our nation's obssession with the unimportant things in life. "Space" ends the album very delicately with piano and powerful vocals. To emphasize one band member's significance to another is a waste of time. Each band member makes the other better and makes the songs take off. I could go on and on about this band's talent in songwriting and music abilities, but that would be denying time with you buying the album. For anyone who has Muse's Black Holes and Revelations or Stadium Arcadium, you'll enjoy this album to the very last second.

A different kind of coldplay sound.....,

I remember the first time i seen these guys at the Serjical Stryke gathering when he introduce the bands. Its something totally new. Their sounds are like more mellow than coldplays. I love the song Embryonic and personally silent movie. It has its moments of rock sound of that heavy guitar in there and its really mellow in some songs.

refreshing blast of modern rock music,

The GoodAn atypical lyrical pattern leads the charge on "Twilight Sky." I don't like to use the word beautiful to describe a man's voice, but that's the best adjective for Narek Pogosyn's melodic delivery. It's during the songs instrumental breaks that it really shines. A rolling piano run dominates "Isn't it Time;" a track about taking time for yourself rather than selling yourself to the daily grind. Emotions run high on the vocal and piano heavy track "Via Satellite." The guitars and drums kick in at just the right peak to send this track over the top. "No Way, No How" is inspirational in its words, but more ballad-like in its musical delivery. It's has a great acoustic tone, and hints of a Middle-Eastern influence. On "Life Simulator," Pogosyn expresses his views on how we have become a manufacture society, rather than relying on what's natural; from food to technology, and even our own bodies. "Space" will touch your heart with its sad theme, which really can be applied to a lot of different difficult losses in life. The Bad Nothing notable The Verdict Slow Motion Reign isn't a band that you would expect from Serj Tankian to produce and release. I was quite surprised at the outcome. The band's debut release is full of great melodies, structures, and arrangements. The lyrics are thought provoking and relatable. Slow Motion Reign is a refreshing blast of modern rock music that never gets dull or repetitive.
