5.0 out of 5 stars An urban Lyle Lovett...
I bought this CD based on a review in the Wall Street Journal--I think it was by Jim Fusilli. (The WSJ reviews tend to be pretty good though I don't know if this bears on the quality of the review or my taste.) The endorsements by Randy Newman and Norah Jones piqued my curiosity as well. 3.0 out of 5 stars It's just alright.
Perhaps I had higher expectations for this CD because all I can say is that the CD is "ok." Nothing special. The words/singing and the musical tune doesn't connect.

(The WSJ reviews tend to be pretty good though I don't know if this bears on the quality of the review or my taste.) The endorsements by Randy Newman and Norah Jones piqued my curiosity as well. Even on the first listen it bypassed my expectations. Perhaps the best description is of an urban Lyle Lovett, whom Julian sounds like at times. The songs have the definite skewed humor of Randy Newman, Lyle Lovett, and even John Prine: "End of the Line" and "Cheap Guitar (reprise)" in particular. Worth the money.

From beginning to end, all the songs on this CD deliver the goods. From wistful to downright funny, each song has a character all its own. The lyrics are splendid...lines like "I want your flu, baby, not just your cough", "Love I'm half mad, I hope that means I'm half sane..." and "...the touch of your lips a lunar eclipse, so soft..." play with language deliver great images...the rest of the lyrics are just plain witty and gritty. The vocals are smooth and the musicians Richard brings on to this project are just outstanding. From beginning to end, an addictive delight.

I really enjoy listening to this cd - It's full of great, interesting songs. Songs such as "If a heart breaks", and "Damn" are cheeky, quirky songs that are a humourous way of looking at our world. Reconmended cd!
