1.0 out of 5 stars Poor book, worse reviews
Wow! I'm reviewer number 3 on a book that is ranked around 1,144,000. The book is very slim on facts, but fat on fear. MSG fueld fear, no doubt.

What I found really galling is that Mr. Steven Speizer, a previous reviewer, couldn't even write his own review, but lifted his comments from old emails that have been floating on the net for a couple of years...

5.0 out of 5 stars What Every American Must Know About Obesity, February 19, 2006
This review is from: The Slow Poisoning Of America (Paperback)
There is a conspiracy in America. A conspiracy to make Americans fat and take their money. This is a book the government does not want you to read. It is a book major food corporations and argibusiness does not want you to read. This is a book Peter Jennings had three copies of and was never allowed to report on it for fear of offending the advertisers. It is a book you will unlikely be able to buy here or any place else until the word gets out.

The root of this conspiracy is if there could be an actual chemical causing the massive obesity epidemic. John Erb has found the chemical and it is poisoning Americans by the millions.

John Erb was a research assistant at the University of Waterloo, in Ontario, Canada and spent years working for the government. He made an amazing discovery while going through scientific journals. In hundreds of studies around the world, scientists were creating obese mice and rats to use in diet or diabetes test studies.

No strain of rat or mice is naturally obese, so the scientists have to create them. They make these morbidly obese creatures by injecting them with MSG when they are first born. The MSG triples the amount of insulin the pancreas creates, causing rats (and humans?) to become obese, they even have a title for the race of fat rodents they create: "MSG-Treated Rats." Thats Right MSG?

Something you can find in any kitchen. MSG is in everything! The Campbell's soups, the Hostess Doritos, the Lays flavored potato chips, Top Ramen, Betty Crocker Hamburger Helper, Heinz canned gravy, Swanson frozen prepared meals, Kraft salad dressings, especially the 'healthy low fat' ones. The items that didn't have MSG had something called Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein, which is just another name for Monosodium Glutamate. It was shocking to see just how many of the foods we feed our children everyday are filled with this stuff. They hide MSG under many different names in order to fool those who catch on.

So why is MSG in so may of the foods we eat? Is it a preservative or a vitamin? MSG is added to food for the addictive effect it has on the human body. Even the propaganda website sponsored by the food manufacturers lobby group supporting MSG at: http://www.msgfacts.com/facts/msgfact12.html explains that the reason they add it to food is to make people eat more.

A study of elderly people showed that people eat more of the foods that it is added to. The Glutamate Association lobby group says eating more benefits the elderly, but what does it do to the rest of us?

'Betcha can't eat just one', takes on a whole new meaning where MSG is concerned! And we wonder why the nation is overweight?

The MSG manufacturers themselves admit that it addicts people to their products. It makes people choose their product over others, and makes people eat more of it than they would if MSG wasn't added. Not only is MSG scientifically proven to cause obesity, it is an addictive substance. Since its introduction into the American food supply fifty years ago, MSG has been added in larger and larger doses to the prepackaged meals, soups, snacks and fast foods we are tempted to eat everyday.

The FDA has set no limits on how much of it can be added to food. They claim it's safe to eat in any amount. How can they claim it is safe when there are hundreds of scientific studies? Both the medical research community and food "manufacturers" have known MSG's side effects for decades. Many more studies are cited in this book that are shown by John Erb that link MSG to Diabetes, Migraines and headaches, Autism, ADHD and even Alzheimer's. The food manufactures are dumping fattening and addictive MSG into our food supply and causing the obesity epidemic we now see.

Even as you read this, George W. Bush and his corporate supporters are pushing a Bill through Congress. Called the "PersonalResponsibility in Food Consumption Act" also known as the "Cheeseburger Bill "this sweeping law bans anyone from suing food manufacturers, sellers and distributors. Even if it comes out that they purposely added an addictive chemical to their foods."

Several months ago, John Erb took his book and his concerns to one of the highest government health officials in Canada. While sitting in the Government office, the official told him "Sure I know how bad MSG is, I wouldn't touch the stuff!" But this top-level government official refused to tell the public what he knew. The big media doesn't want to tell the public either, fearing legal issues with their advertisers. It seems that the fallout on the fast food industry may hurt their profit margin.

This is the book government does not want you to read. Reading this book could save your waistline and your life. The chemical sweeteners and flavor enhancers have too many toxic side effects to ignore.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great justification to have the FDA overhauled, and your life changed, July 11, 2006

For anybody that is interested in what they eat and put into their bodies, this book is a must read. It is an easy read, geared toward the masses, but backed up with a serious list of footnoted reference research articles that would make anybody stand up and take notice that this author did his homework.

The historical background in the book on how the FDA made its decisions on specific food and drinking water additives (i.e. MSG, Aspartame, Fluoride etc.) is more than scary. It highlights the fact there is NO reliable safety net provided by the FDA or other government agencies that is not heavily influenced by corporations and business profits. I am not an activist, but this book makes me want to write a letter or better yet, purchase a copy of the book and mail it to my government representative to initiate a must needed overhaul of the FDA.

If you have kids, plan on having kids, or want to address your own health issues - read this book! It will make you read every food ingredient label in your pantry and in my case, throw out a quarter of my stored canned goods, the impact of this book is that scary.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read eye opener for everyone!, June 7, 2008
By
Chris (Calgary, Alberta Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Slow Poisoning Of America (Paperback)
"The Slow Poisoning of American" is truly an eye opener and a must read for everyone who cares about their health. It is utterly shocking to me that government wants to legislate natural health products that help people heal, yet allow poisons like MSG, aspartame and floride into our food supply unregulated. Since Monsanto produces MSG, it makes me wonder who controls our goverments....the citizens or the corporations who are getting fat with wealth on the backs of the people who's illnesses THEY contribute to
There is MSG in almost everything we eat and knowing that they use it to fatten lab rats certainly explains to me why we have an obesity problem in North America! I have MSG sensitivity and didn't even realize that the reason I was still hungry after eating more than most men, is because there was MSG in the food! Now that I'm aware, I've changed my diet to mostly organic foods (where I still check labels for MSG). Interestingly, I eat a lot less food now and feel full. I can always tell when I've ingested something in a restaurant containing MSG because I'm back to being hungry after a full course meal.
There are many other reasons for eliminating MSG from the diet as it does brain damage if you ingest it hot (like when you eat your mmmmm mmmm good campbells soups).
He also attacks aspartame and floride. No brainers for me in terms of knowing they were not safe to ingest, but he gives you all the reasons why. If you doubt him, pubmed.com is an excellent source to verify what this author writes. He knows what he's talking about and I'm thankful he's out there to make us aware.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm one of the lucky ones, February 16, 2007
This review is from: The Slow Poisoning Of America (Paperback)
I have been fortunate to possess a body that does not accept MSG. The first time I ate something with this obviously ever present additive, my heart started to race, I felt tingly all over and even once, one of my fingers went completely numb. This has continued to affect me in other ways, a strange lethargy that comes over me after the above symptoms that led a doctor in 1995 to diagnose me with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, which fortunately for Pfizer, meant I was to be prescribed Zoloft for the rest of my life, at least that's what my doctor told me. Fortunately, I didn't buy it and unfortunately didn't go off that drug until 5 years later. Today I am drug free but also MSG free. I also do not use fluoridated toothpaste or use artificial sweeteners, and only because it just didn't seem natural. Unfortunately, my city fluoridates our water so like the endless crimes against the American people, corporations and the government that works on their behalf, has left us completely vulnerable to all sorts of harm, inflicted on us by their greedy hands.

I sure wish my mother had been affected by MSG as I have, perhaps she wouldn't be suffering from Alzheimer's as I write this. I hope one day folks will stop living in a dream world in this nation and realize, the enemy is right here at home.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking, June 8, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Slow Poisoning Of America (Paperback)
I had a hard time reading this book, because it is so troubling. The authors seem to have researched their material well and cite loads of footnotes/references (I have not cross-checked very many of them at this writing). The claims are that fluoride (in water and toothpaste) cause more health problems than if not taken and that MSG is in practically all of our foods and has many, many "side" effects such as obesity, diabetes, eye degeneration, cognitive skills, headaches/migraines, ADHD, autism, schizophrenia, epilepsy, alzheimers, Parkinsons, Huntingtons and a few more. It also covers the problems of aspartame and e-coli. Solutions (besides getting the government to take action) suggested include removing things from our diets that have these things in them and taking/using Stevia (a natural sweetener which we already happen to use) and melatonin (which is a new one on me).

This is a good book and a quick read packed with lots of references. For the poisons he talked about, he did a good job showing the effect on your body. I wanted more of the poisons mentioned in the book. While it did a good job on something like MSG, it was missing many of the other chemicals that are put in food daily to effect color, texture, taste and addictive tendency. But this is a very good starting point to make a person more conscious about eating some of the processed food that is so easily available.

Mr. Erb is a typical eco-activist wannabe (an assistant to the assistant psychology professor) who can't take his desire for healthier foods into the marketplace but would rather employ the force of government to make others comply to his will. Fat people and unruly kids are due, not to corporate conspiricies, but to a "victim" mentality culture. "It's always someoe elses fault. Let's sue!"
