Very competent, hard drivin' indie rock, November 15, 2007
This review is from: Slow Speed: Deep Owls (Audio CD)
A very competent, hard drivin' indie rock followup to 2004's Find the Sun from this Chicago-via-Carbondale power trio. And that's bass + bass + drums, which is what gives Bear Claw its particularly thick and sludgy sound, replete with Albini and Weston behind the knobs. The playing is tight even while the songwriting is perhaps a bit samey. Vocals remind this listener a bit of Fugazi's combined frontmen. "Short But Sweet" gives exactly what the title promises, while "By Popular Demand" hits the stride hard once it gets there. Which is the rule of thumb here actually -- wind 'em up and let 'em rip! Recommended if you like Shellac, The Jesus Lizard, Fugazi, At the Drive In.
