Review
When Leon Speroff invited me to contribute the foreward to this book, I wondered if I would find his journal of a season of slow-pitch softball compelling reading. Having recently published my book, Use It or Lose It, that addresses issues on aging, I certainly approve of men over age sixty energetically participating in a competitive softball league of their peers. These "geezer jocks" no doubt find that playing an active team sport helps them revive the lost emotions of shared triumphs and failures that were important in their younger years. I was pleasantly surprised by Leon's journal, which I found both fascinating and uplifting. He is a writer whose informative, engaging and witty prose, sprinkled with humorous anecdotes, brought his "season" alive. Not only did I learn about the intricacies of the properties of bats and gloves, but more importantly, about the challenges of keeping muscles and sinews going after they want to stop. The highs from successful plays and victories, balanced by the mistakes, lost opportunities and defeats, all add to the richness of this story that shows it is never too late to rediscover talents buried in the past. This book is going to make you want to share the camaraderie of a team experience yourself. --Peter Snell, Ph.D. former Olympic gold metal winner in the 1960 and 1964 Olympics
"....a must read for anyone who is playing senior softball. It captures the enjoyment and fun of playing on a team and what your discouver about yourself as a member of that team. --Bill Plummer III Manager ASA National Softball Hall of Fame, Oklahoma City, OK
"....a lovely memoir about men playing softball." --Frank Deford, Senior Writer Sports Illustrated, Commentator, Morning Edition, National Public Radio
