A Smashing Time,

This album has everything I need as a music fan. There's not much more I can say than that. I LOVE every track, especially "SORRY". If you're contemplating on buying the CD, buy it, if only to hear that song. It's fab. To sum it up, for me the album is hypnotic, and enchanting, and really strange.

I enjoy the Raincoats' 'Looking in the Shadows', especially Gina Birch's songs. So when I heard she was in a new band, I figured it oughtta be good. And I was right! She's one of the strangest singers I've heard, so every song--even the not-so-great ones--is an interesting listening experience. The songs Hello Moon, Sorry, and Drink have a frenetic energy I just can't get enough of. I read she's planning a solo album for next year; I'm looking forward to it!

Not another Portishead,

Unlike many of the sample rich sonic sensations popular today, this one has staying power. That's probably why, even though I only gave it a nine, it'll surely be on my ten best list for this year. The first thing that strikes you about the music is Gina Birch's voice. Who does she sound like? Dylan? At times. Lou Reed? Perhaps. At other times there is a blues singer with a haunting, raspy timber weaving into the foreground, then back. Gina used to be with the Raincoats, who broke up, but you'll have to read about that somewhere else. I also like the words, though I will admit I don't always know what they mean.
