4.0 out of 5 stars a good place to start for Crowbar newcomers, December 10, 2004

this is a good Crowbar retrospective that covers their whole career up to their Equilibrium album. the only complaint I have is that it completely skips over their Broken Glass album. a few years ago when all their older albums were re-issued on Spitfire records, I never really understood why the Broken Glass album wasn't included. maybe there were licencing disagreements with the original label. who knows... for the most part it is still a good sampler of all (or most) of their albums from the kings of New Orleans doom-sludge-metal.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good compilation, October 7, 2005

I am relatively new to Crowbar. For about 10 years "Existence Is Punishment" was the only Crowbar song I knew, and I loved it. I finally decided to buy some stuff and I choose this compilation to start with. It's great, I will buy more Crowbar for sure. They are somewhere between metal, hardcore, doom and sludge. They are better and heavier than most doom bands. Most doom bands have whining, wailing vocals that become quite annoying after 3 songs. Not Crowbar, they use angry and desperate hardcore screams, which sounds great and really suits the music much better. Another strongpoint is their raw, ultraheavy sound. Some songs are more hardcore/metal like The Only Factor and All I Have I Gave, others are more doom/sludge like Existence Is Punishment and I Have Failed. And sometimes there's room for beautiful melancholic melody, like on the awesome outro of Odd Fellows Rest and on Planets Collide. All in all a great compilation of a highly original band with a pretty unique sound. If you're into heavy music, you should definitely check this out.
