Adorable, unique book about real love (yes, with slugs!),

When my 6 year old and I were hunting Valentine's Day books in the bookstore, I overlooked this one, because I thought -- how interesting can a book be about slugs. But my daughter read it and said, mom, this is a great one, you read it too! I'm so glad I did...There are so many children's books about valentine's cards and parental love for Valentine's Day, but so few that can be appropriate about actually falling in love in the couple sort of way. This book has managed to do this in a totally adorable and appropriate way for young children. The slugs are so cute -- Marylou falls for Herbie, but is too shy to tell him so she writes him love poems (so cute!) with her slime trail (adorable!) around the garden. He wants to meet her but can't seem to find out who or where she is, and tries to write back, but his poems keep being destroyed or missed by MaryLou, who thinks he doesn't return her affections, but keeps on writing to him, hoping. When they finally connect, it is so sweet, and they live happily ever after! The illustrations are completely lovely -- who would have thought that slugs and their slime trails could be cute! I totally want this book to read over and over with my girls and will be dropping heavy hints to relatives for Valentine's Day!

This book is just too adorable - both the story and the illustrations. My 5 year old daughter loves this book and so do I. It ends a bit abruptly, but other than that it's perfect.

Susan Pearson, Slugs in Love (Marshall Cavendish, 2006)Cute little tale of a slug who becomes infatuated with another slug, and lets him know with poems scribbled around the barnyard. Good intro to rhythm and rhyme for the kiddies, with an amusing mistaken-identity subplot tossed in for good measure. You'll like this one as much as your kids will. *** ½

This is a wonderful story. I am a librarian and I read this story to every grade level from K-fifth grades and my students adore it. It is such a tender love story and the illustrations are delightful. The text makes all of us laugh, and the frustrations of the slugs unable to find one another has all of us on the edge of our seats hoping for a happy finale. I love this book!

Simple tale of affection and miscommunication.,

Ages 4-8 will find this a fun story of love despite slime: slug Marylou loves everything about Herbie - but she's a shy slug and can't get him to notice her. Her poetic attempts simply wash away: is their romance doomed? Kevin O'Malley's lovely drawings accent the simple tale of affection and miscommunication.

Best Valentine's Book for Pre-K - K,

Our house is over-flowing with books that do nothing more than sit on the shelf. The same few books always seem to be read. I've found that getting season appropriate books that are only out for a couple of weeks help make sure the books are read and that we rotate what is being read. It also helps keep their attention. My kids are 4 and 2 1/2. Having a fun, silly book that isn't too long but more than a baby book is important. It's also important for there to be words that my 4 yr old can recognize since she is just starting to read. This book fits the bill! It's a super cute story about a girl slug who writes poems for a boy slug that she likes. He writes poems back. The poems are age appropriate for young kids (rhyming words, only a few lines, uses adjectives and nouns that they know). It's also an easy read for adults. (Have you tried reading 102 Dalmatians? Horrible, over their head book that never ends.) The story in this book also doesn't talk about who has a better Valentine's Day card, doesn't have other characters "putting down" others, etc. (like in Love, Splat). It's a very sweet book!

Romance for the Unlovable!,
By
This review is from: Slugs in Love (School & Library Binding)
This one really is a love story, and is about as mushy as my boys (6&8) will tolerate. It works because the characters are so unusual !SLUGS! What fun to star such an "unlovable" creature in a romantic adventure. And the love is so darn creative... poems written in slime between two cute creatures. What a treasure to have this gentle tale as a resource to introduce the concept of falling in love to my little guys. We LOVE this story! Also, the story follows the days of the week, perfect for review (ask, which day is next? when reading).
