I tell u what. They r definitly filling in my Outkast void right now as far as groups go. This album is a certified sleeper hit. I say sleeper hit because I think they don't have a lot of exposure. I recently seen them on a commercial wit that song "Ease Up" in da background. They deserve s**t like dat if u ask me. The game is so backwards today. If u ask me guys like 50cent, juelz, and young jeezy to name a few don't deserve half of their earnings(that's if the game of hip-hop was based on talent). Their cds weren't quality hip-hop but slum village stay true to their roots which is another thing I love. Quality over quantity is what the game should b based on cause I hate to see a group like them not go platinum cause they put out great music. However u like it they delivered on this album. U want bump is on here, u like that laid back pimped type s**t its on here too. Long story short this album should be in ur collection immediatly. Its currently in my disc changer right now. Worth every $. R.I.P J-Dilla

A must have for the SLUM Fan!,

Slum Village is back for another run of good ol'fashioned hip hop with the release of "Slum Village". "Prequel to a classic" gave listeners a taste of what the village had in store for this release and they didn't disappoint. I am, and have been a Slum Village fan since the rare "Fantastic Vol. 1" and have enjoyed every release thus far. My only complaint about "SV" is that it is too short. I was left wanting to hear more tracks(4 more wouldn't have hurt). 8 tracks with an into and a skit aren't enough. Stand out tracks are "05" with the live horns and drums, and "Multiply" with its layed back feel.
I know it may be a long shot but I look forward to having a Slum album with all four members throughout. Having T3, Elzhi, Baatin, and Jay-Dee going hard on Jay-Dee produced tracks would be the ultimate. Until that day comes, this will have to do. Definitely worth buying!

HOT TO DEATH,

This is Slum's best album YET. Slum Village has been one of my favorite rap groups ever since the Trinity album and this album is a great reminder of the immense skills they posess. Even though they are borderline mainstream they still keep it fresh and flow like they are starving underground artists. Go out and cop this, you won't regret it.

I'd have to say, being a female, I'm very critical of the music I listen to, and if the beats are great but the lyrics are dead, then it's not worth my time. Slum Village seems to intrigue me with songs like "Tainted," but then fall back again when you listen to other songs from their albums. Trinity was a disappointment, and their follow up was an improvement, but here, I felt like the beats and lyrics complimented each other...it's almost like a classic album...almost. "Can I be me" is my alltime favorite, and the following track ft. Dwele is beautiful. Though there aren't many tracks on this ablum, it's definitely worth buying and you money will be well spent.

Slum Villa To The Rescue!,
By
This review is from: Slum Village (Audio CD)
Slum Village has gone through a lot of revamping over the years. It all started with Jay Dee, Baatin, and T3 on their debut release Fantastic, Vol. 2 (there was no Volume 1, although some point to their demo as the first installment.) The collective continued with Elzhi joining the group (after losing super producer Jay-Dee) for Trinity: Past, Present, and Future. The group finally manifested to just T3 and Elzhi for Detroit Deli (now missing the schizophrenic Baatin). Fighting to stay in the game and keep the Slum Village name relevant, they release Prequel To A Classic in early 2005. By this point, they've discovered their direction and purpose and are ready to start all over again to validate their existence. The rock-solid duo release their self titled Slum Village album in hopes of doing just that.
"Multiply" resurrects the signature Slum Village sound that Fantastic, Vol. 2 fans will appreciate the most. "Set It" is an upbeat track that promises to make your head bob back and forth to the beat. "Call Me" features long-time collaborator Dwele singing the hook over an Isley Brother sample that is done like no other song. "05" gives a retrospective of their ongoing transformation as a group and utilizes live instrumentation for a change of pace from the norm. Slum Village dives deeper and gives even more particulars regarding their constant reconstruction with the song "Def Do Us." Other stand outs include the energetic "Ez Up," the equally upbeat "Hear This," and the poignant "Can I Be Me." Slum Village (simply known to "day one fans" as just 'Slum' ) has done all that it can do to satisfy the powers that be. They finally arrived at the right formula of beats, rhymes, and life to get their point across to the masses. Now, if the masses don't respect them for their work or just simply want a 'canned' product, then they can continue listening to same songs repeat over and over again on these Top 40 radio stations. Slum Village is an album that only true hip-hop fans can appreciate anyways, so T3 and Elzhi won't have to worry about any devoted followers running for the hills any time soon.

This is BY FAR the best Slum material since Fantastic Vol. 2. It seems they finally have everything together after dealing with all the changes within the group and typical label bs. You can tell T3 and Elzhi finally feel really comfortable together as emcee's and it shows through and through on this album. The production is tight, the rhymes are tight. S Villa definately brought there A game on this album and have made a statement that they are a true force in Hip Hop. If your a Slum fan this is a MUST have and even if your not, this a good time to jump on board.

I've been an SV fan since 2000 when I first heard "Fall in Love" off a mixtape. I only had 1 minute and 20 seconds of the track but it was so captivating. I put that song on my voicemail and whoever heard it for the first time was amazed and they had to know who the artist was. Needless to say Fantastic Vol 2 is one of my favorite rap albums ever. The latest SV release SLUM VILLAGE is not far behind. I really love the last two installments. Classic SV sound. For all who have nver heard of SV I suggest picking up the entire catalog but thats not likely so grab Vol 2 and SLUM VILLAGE. Detroit Deli is real crazy too but the "first" and last albums are good places you can start. I guarantee that if you have either of these albums playing as background music or its something you are pumping, the person next to you will be more than curious to know what its about. The sound is infectious. I cant say much more. If you are in the NYC area, check SV out this Friday at BB Kings 1/13. SV for LIFE!!!!

HOW DO I BEGIN TO DISCRIBE THIS ALBUM? I CONSIDER IT A BRIEF INTERPRETATION OF ART, MUSIC, AND THE BLACK EXPERIENCE "IN AMERICA" INTERTWINED. I START BY SAYING THAT T AND EL ARE TWO OF THE BEST SUBLIMINAL RAPPERS IN THE INDUSTRY RIGHT NOW. LYRICISM IS A FORTE FOR SLUM VILLAGE AND HAS ALWAYS BEEN SINCE THE BEGINNING. THIS ALBUM IS FOR THOSE OF US WHO HAVE FOLLOWED THESE GUYS STRAIT FROM FANTASTIC AND THE DIRTY DISTRICT MIX ALBUM, YOU KNOW, THE LESS "MAIN STREAM" ALBUMS, TO THE COLABORATION WITH DWELE AND JOHN LEGEND. THESE GUYS REPRESENT WHAT IS LOST IN MAIN STREAM HIP-HOP AND R & B, TRUE TALENT AND MUSIC INSPIRED RAPS. LET'S GET ROWED FOR THE REUNION FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO KNOW WHAT I MEAN!!!!!!!!!!!
