Rogan took her responsibilities as best friend and protector of Princezna Haydyn Dyzvati very seriously. So when Haydyn succumbed to the sleeping disease that could only be cured by the somna plant, Rogan was ready to do whatever it took to save her.

Even if that meant journeying to the farthest reaches of Phaedra into hostile territory. And even if that meant traveling with the Captain of the Guard, Vikomt Wolfe Stovia, her longtime adversary and son of the man who murdered her entire family.

Haydyn was the only person she trusted and loved and Rogan would not give up without a fight. Phaedra needed her. She needed her. Haydyn's recovery was worth any unpleasantness and risk to her own safety that might come from traveling side-by-side with a man she despised and one who might just take this opportunity to seek out his revenge.

But when their travels put them in even greater peril than she could ever have imagined, Rogan may just have to seek help and solace from this most unlikely of persons, her sworn enemy.

***

Slumber is a gripping, deliciously tormenting, and absolutely magical tale about a feisty and daring heroine and her brave and worthy protector who are on a quest to bring back the cure to their slumbering Princezna.

Phaedra is in jeopardy. With the Princezna's evocation growing weaker by the day, unrest begins to make itself known at Phaedra's distant borders.

And when Princezna Haydyn falls into a deep sleep that will most assuredly result in death without the cure, the rare somna plant that is located at the farthest reaches of Phaedra, Rogan sets out to find this plant that will save her friend and restore order.

I wanted to like this--although I am an adult, I love good YA fantasies like Graceling, or Robin McKinley's Damar books. The premise and setting were promising. But the heroine was shallow--she was a Valley Girl in Medieval Land. The writing was often awkward--the characters repeatedly "smirked" and "huffed". The plot degenerated into the heroine doing something silly and getting kidnapped and leered at. A lord makes a pass at her to get her to find his lost girlfriend--I found that strained my credulity too much. I couldn't finish it. Try "Entwined" or "The Raven Ring" for examples of clever or tough heroines and good writing in a fantasy setting. The author has some good ideas, but needs to work on improving her writing (too many errors also) and characterization.

I have only recently been experimenting with purchasing some of the less expensive Kindle novels, and I have gotta say, its a crap-shoot. Its a pleasant surprise when one is decent, and down-right exciting when its is great. This one falls into the latter category.

Others have given a good synopsis of the story so I won't get into details of the storyline. I will say that it is an excellent Fantasy/Romance/Action along the lines of "Graceling." The characters are well-written, interesting and likable. The romance is slow in building, and although it is a large part of the book, it doesn't detract from the adventure.

I have been reading all of Ms. Young's releases over the past week or so, and one of the things I like best in them is the strong lead female characters that don't take any crap from the men in the stories. This one is no exception. Although Rogan's 'power' is rather sublime, she more than makes up for it with the strength of her personality.

So, if Fantasy/Romance with a heavy dash of action and strong female leads is your thing, I thoroughly recommend Slumber! I look forward to the next chapter in The Chronicles of the Fade!

This was the fourth book I've read by Samantha Young and I'm most definitely a huge fan!! I loved this book, it may just be my favorite of Samantha Young books thus far (though I still have a few more to buy and read). I don't write long reviews, but I will say that I love how Young does such a wonderful job world building. With some books you're thrown into the story without history being given but with her books there's always history given and it makes the worlds we read about that much more exciting because we actually know what's going on! I loved Rogan in this story... loved how loyal she was to her best friend and I liked the emotional journey she had to go on in order to get to know Wolfe and eventually realize her feelings for him. I won't get into spoilers, but I will say that I LOVED Wolfe... he is perhaps my favorite male character I've read about in a long time!! I do wish Rogan had been a bit less stubborn but I understood her reservations with Wolfe. Wolfe... swoons... he was just perfect. I loved how he was in love but managed to still keep his backbone and remain manly. Sometimes I think authors make men into these sappy puppies once they fall in love and I hate that. I like when guys are still a bit mean and vocal even after they declare love for someone. Anyhoo... I can't wait to read more about him and I do hope he keeps his strong character in the books to come!!

I was sad to learn that the second book in this series isn't out yet... sighs... I absolutely can't wait to keep reading about Rogan and Wolfe and Hayden (hoping she comes to her senses and decides to have a future with Matai. <--- hope I spelled his name right... it's early and I left my Kindle upstairs ;-)

Anyhow, amazing book!! Can't wait to read the next and Samantha Young is one heck of a talented author!!! READ IT!!
