Bend Time to Protect the Cooper Clan

The critically-acclaimed Sly Cooper series returns with an brand-new, epic adventure, and its first on PlayStation Vita. Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time picks up where the 2005 PlayStation 2 release, Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves, left off. The Cooper Gang has split up, with Sly surprisingly giving up thievery for a more domestic life, and Bently being entrusted with the Thievius Raccoonus - the book that holds the history and skills of the gang. Unfortunately Bently also built a time machine, which seems to be causing the pages of the Thievius Raccoonus to disappear. As a result Sly's old pal Bentley, must round up the gang and set things right or the Cooper Clan legacy may disappear forever.

5.0 out of 5 stars I feel like I'm in the middle of a cartoon! February 5, 2013
Platform for Display:PlayStation Vita
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Whereas games from the "Ratchet and Clank" universe make me feel as though I'm in the middle of a Pixar movie, "Thieves in Time" achieves an equally impressive feat: It makes me feel like I'm taking part in one of the hand-drawn afternoon cartoons of the 80s and 90s (which I would regularly watch after school, while nibbling on snacks). I love everything about the presentation in this game: the characters are adorable, the story is hilarious and absurd, and the cel-shaded approach has never looked finer. The time traveling plot and assortment of anthropomorhpic animals takes me back to the days of shows like "DuckTales".

There is, however, a complaint that I have with this game: I wish I had control of Sly Cooper for greater lengths of time (ALL the time would be even better). While Murray and Bentley are cool characters, and they make for an awesome family/team, I found that I began sighing every time one of their segments began loading. When Sly is in control, this platformer can attain a certain level of "zen" as you engage in your chains of stealthy feats- leap, perch, climb, balance, strike, repeat (and the controls are identical to the PS2 games, as far as I remember- they've aged wonderfully). However, when the other characters are in control, this becomes something of a clumsy, forced platformer that left me longing for Sly's stealthy, agile ways. That's just my humble opinion- others may enjoy the segments of Sly's friends and the attempts to instill gameplay diversity, but I was always anxious to return to the thieving raccoon. And in the defense of the developer, controlling Sly's friends has always been a part of the experience, even with the original "Thievius Raccoonus".

5.0 out of 5 stars It's like Sly 2 Revamped April 11, 2013
Platform for Display:PlayStation Vita|Verified Purchase
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I actually purchased the Sly Collection for PS3 and made sure I beat all 3 previous entries before playing this game, and while I can see how this game gave sufficient information of Sly's past, I enjoyed getting to know the characters over the course of 4 fantastic games.

This particular entry into the series reminded me of the best of the first 3, Sly 2, but with improvements. Not only is the Treasure concept back in the game (no idea why it was taken out in the third instalment), but it is even better because the treasures are displayed in the safehouse. Also, once all treasures in each level are collected, the arcade opens allowing you to play minigames that are slightly more advanced versions of the various ones found throughout the rest of the game. Safes are also back along with secret bottles (again, no idea why the third game removed these) and each safe has a very cool and useful item inside. That's all I'll say about that.

Concerning the graphics, I was stunned at how beautiful they look on the Vita's OLED screen. Not only are the environments themselves sparkling, but the backgrounds are also quite astonishing.

As far as gameplay goes, the world is much more free-roaming rather than linear. Of course, each quest requires you to go to a certain location and steal keys, reach a destination without being spotted, or any of the other various tasks that are required of you, but because there are so many collectables (including the addition of Sly Masks which will require a lot of searching or luck to locate them all) keeps you playing for even longer. The replay value on this game it moderate for the casual gamer, but for completionists like myself, it is very high.

This truly is a worthy sequal to the previous three games, and if you enjoy Sly Cooper, or if you have yet to give his adventures a chance, then I would highly suggest picking up the trilogy on the PS3 and definitely Thieves in Time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sly's Back with all the good and bad VITA review March 10, 2013
By Jason
Platform for Display:PlayStation Vita
This is a review for the Vita Version Only, i bought the PS3 version because it was on sale, but my PS3 isn't with me at this time, so i just played the Vita version. Cross Sale = Awesome.

First I've played all the others on the PS2. Sly 2 being my favorite and still is.

I think most people touched on the basics of what makes the game good/bad. but haven't addressed the Vita specific info, so i'll try here.

Graphics:
Looks great, for only being on a 5 inch screen, the game feels just right. Frame rate can get a bit laggy in the later worlds though. but the colors and lightling in some of the set piece simply look stunning on the vita.

Controls:
For the basic jumping, running, climbing trees bit, the controls work great. My two issues have to do with the touch screen stuff and motion controls. The touch screen is used to switch costume, weapon type, and use the binoculars. For non emergency situation switching from costume to costume isn't that big of an issue. But during boss battle i found it to be laggy and resulted in my death way too often. After a while i really wished i could change costume using a responsive button.

For the motions controls they are used to solve puzzles, fire arrows, and a dance sequence with Carmelita. The puzzles seemed to be actually made with the vita in mind and i bet feel better on the vita over the PS3 that said, when i have to twist and turn my vita and then my head to see what the hells going on i find it kind of annoying and jarring when i was just laying in my bed all comfortable and i have to sit up to roll a ball around. As for firing arrows, i couldn't get it to work well enough to use it, and instead used the L stick.
